Concert: French fancy

Charlotte Gainsbourg is the epitome of the female French singer. Go ahead, check your dictionary under 'female French singer', and, i promise, you'll find a picture of her seductively smiling back at you, probably with a Gauloises sticking out of her lips. She is, of course, the daughter of French demigod and singing sex-hound Serge Gainsbourg, but where he was all passion and naughtiness, she brings a more whispered and melancholic tone to her sexy vocals, with music that takes it's influences from electro and French pop. Her latest album, Rest, has had an eclectic mix of songwriters working on it, from Paul McCartney to Connan Mockasin to Daft Punk, and she'll be playing live at Volkhaus tonight (Thursday). I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away.

Stand-up: Egg-cellent comedy

If you can cook well, and make me laugh, then i'm yours forever. Forget about the romance; it's the food and frolics i'm interested in. Luckily for me, George Egg is in town on Friday at Mascotte. In an unlikely twist of fate, George is a stand-up comedian chef. That doesn't mean he's a chef who happens to do stand-up. No, he actually cooks on stage, using a variety of unconventional tools like office equipment and power tools, while doing his hilarious stand-up comedy. And the best part? You get to eat his culinary creations after the show. In a comedy double bill, George will be joined by the funny, and extravagantly bearded, Phil Jerrod. In English.

Market: Crafty Christmas

When it comes to Christmas presents, they do say it's the thought that counts, but if your thought is to get someone a voucher again this year, then your thoughts are probably best kept to yourself. So, rather than wasting your money, or buying the first thing that catches your eye, why not put a little love into it and make something yourself to give away. The Print & Craft Christmas Market at Kosmos on Sunday will give you instructions on hand-crafting presents using candle making, knitting, embroidery, or even decorating gingerbread rockets, as well as stalls offering their own handmade gifts. And if you need a little treat for yourself after all your hard craft work, they'll also have a free concert in the club room by ambient electro artist Manon.

Concert: Mysterious man

I guess it's a sign of the times when a musician who doesn't do many interviews, and has a minimal social media presence, is labelled the 'most mysterious man in music', but what do we actually know about Allan Rayman? Well, he's a Canadian singer who manages to combine a soulful hip-hop swagger with a dirty, grungy grit. His latest album is called Harry Hard-On; which may say more about him than a few Tweets or an interview ever could. And, finally, he's playing live at Mascotte on Sunday night, and i have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. Not so mysterious now are you, Allan?

Good to know: Sweet sixteen

If you’re looking for a place to have your own party or event, a great new space has just opened its doors in the Seefeld area. Klein16 has been put together with love, passion and care...and a state-of-the-art professional event kitchen (sometimes love just isn’t enough!). They’re open to any ideas you have for your own event, but will, of course, be having their own events taking place. Check their calendar for details. Every Tuesday, for example, masterchef Peter Marty will be coming in to cook great 3-course lunches, or on Thursday 15th December, you can learn how to bake some delicious Christmas treats with Petite & Sweet.

Eating: Say Cheese! Best places for Fondue in Zurich

The weather forecast predicts colder temperatures, so it’s time to recommend some venues for fondue. And remember – only tourists believe that there are penalties if you lose your piece of bread in the pot...well, and some locals. Don't believe them! Here you'll find my favorite hot (cheese) spots in town to enjoy a really good fondue.

Good to know: Specialities from Zurich

Martin Walker is a Zurich-based author and publisher (if you're still looking for a gift for a German speaking friend, I recommend «Baden gehen in Zürich» or «Zürich by Food»). In his guest column, he shares seven Zurich specialities he'll give away for Christmas.
