Did you know that the longest zip line in Europe is under an hours drive from Zurich? No? Well it is and, a few days ago i decided to take the train up to ski resort of Hoch-YBrig and test it out.
Once i arrived at the Hoch-Ybrig station (which is at Hoch-Ybrig Weglosen if you are taking public transport,) my friend and i took the cable car to Seebli and then the chairlift to Sternen. As you arrive at the end of the chairlift you can see the start of the zip line and i have to admit to some feelings of trepidation when i saw it for the first time.
After the safety instruction, (which was done in both English and German,) and a short wait for the six or seven people before us it was my turn to zip. The zip line runs in two stages. The first and longest stage runs down to the valley and over its 1800 meters you can reach speeds of up to 120kph. As the instructor released me onto the line and i began my journey my trepidation evaporated. The sound of the line, the wind, the incredible view and the trees rushing beneath me, it really was exhilarating.
It’s worth saying that before i took the ride is was really scared. But the staff are professional and friendly, the infrastructure new and well maintained and once you are on the line you actually feel quite secure.
After the one and a half minute journey i arrived at the middle station where i changed cables for the final descent. The final stage is shorter and the instructors encourage you to try spinning round or riding backwards which, of course, i did.
So i did it. I rode the longest zip line in Europe. Would i do it again? Try and stop me.
1. As the ride is short it is a good idea to combine the zip line with some hiking. Head to Spirstock and walk the hour long hike along the ridge. The views are incredible taking in the Vierwaldstattersee, and the Pilatus, Grosse Mythen and Rigi mountains.
