A Hammam is a Turkish bath and when the weather gets cold i seek out an Oasis of warmth and well being. Thankfully Zurich has quite a few hammams and spa’s and as i am a generous guy i’m going to share my favourite hammams and saunas with you today.
Next to the Langstrasse
We all know where the Volkshaus is but the space underneath is home to the Stadtbad. Scrub your body ‘till you’re pink like a baby, heat yourself up on the hot stone and enjoy the stylish ambience. Oh yeah, and Wednesday is women only.
The view from the heated outdoor pool in the thermal baths in the Hürlimann area is a unique and special one. The roman style baths are so relaxing that i regularly fall asleep. It literally is a dream in the heart of the city.
The Hammam Bazaar is hidden right next to the Patumbah Park. At first glance, the grey building looks like a beehive, but appearances are deceptive: inside, two-hours of wellness in oriental style await you. If you drop by at the weekend and are still hungry after relaxing, you must visit the salon. A rich nomadic breakfast is served there until 4 pm.
The best view, (in spite of the picture of that guys bum,) of all is the Sauna by the lake and what could be better than a dip in the lake when you get too warm. Hot, cold, hot, cold - let’s get the circulation stimulated and that immune system boosted.
Probably the largest sauna garden in the city is hidden away on the Zürichberg, where the homes are large and the people are beautiful. (or is the people are large and the homes beautiful? I can never remember.) The various saunas and the steam bath are also beautiful so well worth a visit.
The spa at the Dolder is really the glittering diamond in the crown of Zurich’s wellness world. This world of relaxation was designed by the American designer Sylvia Sepielli: various indoor and outdoor baths, massages, saunas, beauty treatments - you'll find them all here. Of course, the whole thing has its price, but it’s hard to find anything more luxurious.
Not just for the hotel guests. Zurich’s women can also be happy and relaxed about a steam bath, a Finnish sauna and a bio sauna at the Hotel Alma. And all with an amazing roof terrace. Well, apparently! They won’t let me in.
