If you regularly ride the tram 3 or 14 you may have noticed the police station on the other side of the street to the Sihl river. The main thing I noticed about it was the retro looking neon sign that is more reminiscent of a bar or club than a police station. Behind the police station lies the Kaserneneareal, a large open space surrounded by old barracks buildings.
The Canton police are now moving to a new location and in a city as deprived of land as Zürich a large open space has politicians and property developers salivating at the prospect of getting their hands on it. So what are the plans for this area of the city? No-one knows yet as the plans for its development has turned into a political hot potato with the leftist city council favouring uses for artistic and public purposes and the right wing cantonal government preferring commercial exploitation.
Issues of funding for the repair of the old buildings have now crept into the equation, stirring up the row even further but at present it remains an area that is open to the public and hosts quite a few cultural events. Take a look around while it is in its current incarnation, it might not be that way for long…
So…this weekend will see yet another popular vote with Covid once again providing the issue and plenty of controversy. There are also some pretty important local issues that need to be ironed out which will affect the cities road users.
