Only Game In Town

As the dark clouds gather and the cold winds blow it’s the time to break out your thick jumpers and winter coats. But it’s not all bad news. Autumn is the hunting season and the fine game finds its way back to the city, direct from the forest. Let me whet your appetite…venison schnitzel or Wildjus with Spätzl. (mmmmmm) Or how about wild boar entrecôte or pacceri with game sausage ragout from the Poschiavo valley. Where is the best game in town? I’ll tell you here.

GartenhofGartenhof, between Bahnhof Wiedikon and Werd, is a great place to sample the autumn classics. From lamb’s lettuce salad to spätzli. Or wild boar entrecôte, saddle of venison and deer carpaccio. 

Just a few steps up the street lies Hermanseck where they are also going wild for game. Besides the delicious meat dishes, the homemade Spätzli with chanterelle cream sauce gets my taste buds humming. 

Autumn specialities also find their way onto the table at the indoor riding arena. The wild boar is really tasty and the roast ibex is great. Taking a vegetarian on a date? They also do an excellent vegetarian autumn platter although, after all that meat you’re unlikely to make it to first base. 

If you are visiting Sihlcity take the opportunity to visit Wirtschaft zur Au. The restaurant sits on the opposite side of the north entrance and the food during their game weeks is excellent.

Over in the Poschiavo valley the game hunters of Graubunden are on the prowl. They deliver roe, chamois and deer to the Wirtschaft Ziegelhütte in Schwamendingen and if you are very lucky there may be an ibex there as well. The wild pigs come from Sarganserland or Aargau and all animals are delivered in their entirety and processed in their new kitchen. Game is available until the 23rd of October - followed by their legendary Alpsau-Metzgete.
