Zurich (EN) : Zurich 13.06.2024: Grills, Feminism & Pride

Guete Morge Ronster

What an interesting weekend we have ahead! First up, for the Ronsters who are out and about in the city, it is worth knowing that there are going to be a few marches. Firstly, the Frauenstreik march on Friday, followed by the Pride march on Saturday. If you are trying to get around during these times, it might be wise to leave a little extra time. Or simply scrap your plans and join the fun!

For the sports fans, we have the start of the Euros, so I put together a list of places to check out the matches. But if you really couldn’t give a ________ (insert expletive here,) about twenty-two multimillionaires chasing a leather bag (you can see this on the Bahnhofstrasse anyways), then I’ve got a handy map with some top barbecue tips. So, whatever you do, have a great weekend and...

Give my love to the city

Politics: Equality For All Women

Friday is the 14th of June, and, as usual, it’s Frauenstreik. Switzerland’s record on equality is pretty dismal with discrepancies between pay and pensions, as well as a raft of other issues that disproportionately affect women. This year, their demands include the implementation of equal pay and higher wages, more childcare, a reduction in working hours, and respect in the workplace with zero tolerance for sexualized violence (should that even be a discussion in this day and age?). The main march and demo start at Bürkliplatz at 5:30 pm.

This weekend also marks the start of another important festival, the Zurich Pride Festival. This year, the festival takes place at Landiwiese on both Friday and Saturday. Like most festivals, there are plenty of live acts, including Switzerland’s Eurovision winner, Nemo. But don’t forget about the demonstration and march, which starts at 2pm on Saturday at Helvetiaplatz.

Warren Haynes: the guitar hero you need in your life! Blending rock and blues, his soulful solos and gritty vocals light up every stage. From the Allman Brothers Band to Gov't Mule, he’s your go-to for a sonic adventure. He’s playing the Kaufleuten on Monday and, thanks to my good friends at All Blues, i have two pairs of tickets to give away. Click the buttons or the link to find out how to win, win, win.

Good to know: Best Places To Watch The Euro's

The big kick off is approaching. The start of the European Championships is mere hours away and there is some mouthwatering matches upcoming, not least the perennial grudge match between Germany and Switzerland on the 23rd of June. As Zurich is a city with an incredibly multinational population the tournament is sure to be a colourful affair and what better way than a public viewing is there to enjoy the match and soak up the atmosphere, (apart from going to the stadium itself?) I’ve come up with a little list of places that will be showing the games.

Good to know: The Thrill Of The Grill.

Summer isn't summer if there isn't a proper outdoor barbecue. Or several. Let's say, every evening. Even today. The principle is simple:

  • Find a nice summer day. (this might be the hardest part.)
  • Invite friends
  • Choose a grill master
  • And a DJ, of course
  • Get 10 kilos of ice from the gas station
  • Get 10 kilos of food

Now you just need to find a good place to get grilling. But where? Well, i have a few ideas and, if you don’t fancy lugging a grill around, why not use on of the two public electric grills in the city. But nowadays barbecues are easy to transport and don’t leave swathes of burnt destruction behind them. The «Tagi», (that’s the Tages Anzeiger BTW,) even tested a few. But whatever grill or barbecue you have, the most important thing is a nice cozy place. Here are a few options from A to Z which i’ve put together in a handy map.
