Hallo Gast, du hast:
Artist in residence

Kees Hensen is a man after my own heart: novelist, poet, photographer, videographer and mixed media collage-maker, the Dutch artist could easily lay claim to the title of modern Renaissance man. Galerie Burgerstocker opens his first gallery exhibition, Of All Abandoned Places, with photographs, sculptures and collages, and the opportunity to speak with Hensen, himself.
Thursday 6 pm to 9 pm, Galerie Burgerstocker

A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-lop-bam-boom!

Little Richard’s Tutti Frutti will be transformed on Friday night when Hiltl presents Tutti Frutti: Mixed Music with Flavour and Style. DJ T Shot and Armin Diethelm (A-Team) play disco, house, soul, hip hop, ‘80s and ‘90s tunes. Admission is free.
Friday 11 pm, Club Hiltl

In the Hood

American techno pioneer Robert Hood’s music is marked by its insistent loops, rising and falling patterns and driving funk groove. It has the energy of James Brown, but the hypnotic rhythms of minimal Detroit techno. Catch him with Styro2000, Darrien and Digitalheart at Rohstofflager.
Saturday 11 pm, Rohstofflager

Mama’s cookin’

Geneva’s Mama Rosin and Hell’s Kitchen play Ziegel au Lac at Rote Fabrik this Sunday. Wondering what to expect for your 20 franc entry fee? These videos give you an idea of the irreverence and energy Mama Rosin is known for: Le pistolet and Le two-step de l’haricot.
Sunday 9.30 pm, Ziegel au Lac at Rote Fabrik

Bossa nova and Miles

At the end of a long day, a dram of whisky and a dose of jazz helps me wind down, and Ron Carter is one of my favourites. The grandmaster of bassists in modern jazz, Carter has played with everyone from Miles Davis to Chet Baker. He comes to Tonhalle Zurich, and tickets range from 20 to 85 francs.
Monday 8 pm, Tonhalle Zurich

Archival listening

Channel your inner (musical) librarian by seeing Seattle’s Grand Archives at Hafenkneipe. I like their folksy, alternative feel – perfect for a chilled Wednesday night. Seattle may not be famous for sunlight, but illumination and warmth characterise this band’s sound. Entry is 20 francs.
Wednesday 7.30 pm, Hafenkneipe

Blog: Sealed with a kiss

I love seeing my city through fresh eyes, and there are many Expat blogs about Zurich that remind me of how unique – and hilarious! – this city can be. Kristi’s From A(tlanta) to Z(urich) blog has a funny entry about Swiss kiss culture. In my opinion, she’s come up with some pretty apt kiss classifications (not that I ever kiss and tell):

“The non-Swiss European who has lived in Switzerland for less than three months way: Fake kiss twice as they did in their mother country, then watch as they awkwardly remember they now are supposed to fake kiss a third time, head butt each other in the nose, apologize profusely and blame it on the really good beer you are both enjoying.”

Web clip

A graffiti penis looking for love finds himself...er...underdressed for the occasion. Watch it here (but first make sure your screen is titled away from your co-workers!).

Web tip

likeyou - the artnetwork is a Zurich-based information bureau dedicated to the international distribution of information for contemporary visual arts. You can advertise your own art event, or post comments and reviews about other shows. I think the new Guillermo Kuitca show at Galerie Hauser & Wirth is a good pick.
