Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 1.4.2010: Westwood, paradise & happy Easter

Dear friends,

A long weekend is coming up, yeah! I love Easter: chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. If you feel the same way about the sweet stuff, maybe it’s a good idea to sign up for the Zurich marathon, which takes place on 11 April, to get back in shape for summer. Either way, happy Easter to all of you! Don’t forget that most shops will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Hallo Gast, du hast:
Dachkantine’s dvd is out!

As I mentioned last week, I still can’t quite let go of my Dachkantine days. Luckily, Cabaret celebrates the release of the Dachkantine dvd this Thursday by featuring some of the djs who played there regularly: Noze, Thomas Brinkmann, Styro2000, Nader and Alex Dallas. I won’t miss it.
Thursday 11 pm, Cabaret

Foot massage

Zurich’s Viadukt will soon be a meeting place for business and culture, as well as the city’s first covered market. Kuenzli, the Swiss shoe brand, celebrates by opening its flagship store there. Olympic skicross champion Mike Schmid will be on hand to sign autographs, and Prosecco and appetizers will be served. Last (but definitely not least), I should mention that foot massages are also on offer. What more do I have to say to convince you?
Thursday 11 am - 6.30 pm, Viadukt 21

Nostalgia

For those of you who – like me – are truly nostalgic for the 1980s, you’ll be pleased to hear that this long weekend is one for revivals. X-tra hosts a hip hop festival (with De la Soul, among many others), and Stall 6 presents The Rap History, which is wittily billed as a seminar, and features Steinski from NYC. For the young at heart, I have two festival passes to give away.
Email me.

Friday-Sunday, X-tra / Friday 10 pm, Stall 6

Play it through

Two legends from the Big Apple club scene are playing in Zurich on Saturday: Hive presents the hypnotic rhythms of Abe Duque, and the turntable skills of Gene Le Fosse from Cielo Club. Hive is clearly the place to be on Saturday; it’s not often you have the opportunity to see musicians like this in your own backyard.

Saturday 11 pm, Hive

Easter brunch

Brunch on Sunday tastes even better if you know that you don’t have to go to work the next day. This Sunday, Hubertus offers an Easter brunch with sounds by The Legendary Lightness. The indie group from Zurich offers a mellow soundtrack for a lazy day. You have to be a member to enter Hubertus, but you can get a membership at the door for 20 Francs.
Sunday; brunch from 11 am, concert from 4 pm, Hubertus

Swiss paradise

The weather forecast for Easter is not looking good, so a trip to the museum might be the right choice. Museum für Gestaltung hosts an exhibition called Paradise Switzerland, displaying pictures promoting Switzerland. The posters bring together distinctive examples of advertising from 1900 until today. Expect a lot of mountains, cows and traditional costumes. The museum is open on Easter Monday but closed on Good Friday.
Until 25.7.10, Museum für Gestaltung

Midweek affair

Have you ever heard of the composers Muluqen Melesse or Getatchew Mekurya? Neither had I, until I listened to the Imperial Tiger Orchestra from Geneva and their mix of 1970s Ethiopian composers and jazz. Check it out on myspace or see the band live at Moods this Wednesday.
Wednesday 8.30 pm, Moods

Eating

Sihlstrasse 97 used to be known for Italian ice cream. Not anymore. A while back a Vietnamese restaurant moved there: Saigon. It’s their second venue, but I never visited their first one. I like their locale at Sihlporte for lunch. It’s fairly busy, but the friendly staff usually manage to squeeze you in. The pho soups are very tasty. As they’re made fresh for each customer, you might need to extend your lunch hour a bit.

Vivianne Westwood talks to Elle TV about the environment, the credit crunch and music: “If you look up a word in the dictionary, you’re a freedom fighter.” You’ve got to love her.  See interview here.
