Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 9.6.2011: Mystery tour, international radio & suprisingly interesting stamps

Dear friends

We sure are lucky people. Not only did we get a day off last week but the Bank Holiday bureau have decided we deserve another day off this Monday. This of course means a nice long weekend to relax and enjoy ourselves although the weather looks we’ll need to do most of that inside. I still don’t see that as a bad thing. Happy long weekend!
Give my love to the city, Ron

American hero

Jeff Bridges is an actor who is fantastic in every film he does but doesn’t generate the white heat necessary to bring him into De Niro level of acclaim. He is also one of my favourite actors. Xenix are showing a Bridges season over the next few weeks which really shows that he is Bigger than Lebowski (also the title of the season). I have 3 x 2 tickets to give away on Saturday to The Last American Hero, a 1973 true-life move with our hero as a stock car driver. As it has no subtitles and is not available on DVD in Switzerland, Xenix offers the only chance you’ll get to see the movie here. E-mail me.
Thursday and Saturday 9.15 pm, Xenix

Radio world

The 2nd International Radio Festival goes on air today under the name ‘listen to how the world sounds’ and Zurich will become the centre, for 10 days, of the radio world. 30 of the best radio stations have converged from all directions on Zurich and will resend their live shows back to the world. This year’s guest country is the UK so expect some fantastic Anglo talent. Also on board are Bruno from Ibiza, the East Village Radio NY and Samurai.fm from Tokyo. And if all this listening makes you want to dance, then the evenings are handed over to the djs to play live. Programme/Listen
Thursday to 19th June, 8 am on the radio
8 pm, Papiersaal

Rio grande

They seem to grow up so fast these days. Already Rio Bar has its 2nd birthday this weekend. With its riverside location and beer garden, this little bar has become an oasis in the city centre. And although they may only be 2 years old they are planning a big party - an eclectic mix of talents all under the moniker, the Rio All-Stars, will be performing. Be sure to help this baby bar take its first steps to toddler-dom.
Friday 4 pm, Rio Bar

Magical mystery tour

The urban hiking company Müllerlust is back on the road! As usual the details are shrouded in mystery but what i can tell you is the meeting time is at 9 pm at the Pavilion on Bürkliplatz. The curious and veterans alike are welcome. They’ve advised that hiking boots and backpack can be left behind but you should bring along fishing rod or swimsuit. They also have their gang of djs to act as pied-pipers. As I said, they like to keep details to a minimum, so there really is only one way to find out. I’ll see you there!
Saturday 9 pm, Bürkliplatz

Life and soul of the party

In an interview, Soul Clap said that a good musician shouldn’t restrict himself to one genre only. And when asked to describe their current style they called it a “sound hybrid of heavy Toronto club mix basses and hip danceable Boston eFunk”. If you’re unsure what that’s supposed to mean, it’s best to listen to it yourself. It’s certainly music to dance to or to chill out. On Saturday, they play with Wold & Lamb at the Loft – roof terrace included.
Saturday 11 pm, The Loft, Hermetschloostrasse 70

Happy Sunday

It’s Sunday and time to party, as Monday is a bank holiday. Therefore perfect to head to Cabaret for one of the regular DubExMachina nights featuring dubstep, funky and beyond. This time with Scuba as main act. And in the smaller room upstairs, Motherland Soundsystems found a new residence. Happy holiday!
Sunday 11 pm, Cabaret

Jam it

If you like jazz, I’m sure you found your way to Mehrspur before, where jam sessions are held every Wednesday. This Wednesday is the season end party of JazzBaragge with various musicians form Zurich’s Jazz scene followed by Strozzini.
Wednesday 8.30 pm, Mehrspur

Good to know

I like stamps. Not to collect, but as a decoration for special letters like birthday cards or invitations. So whenever I need a special one, I head to the post office next to Fraumünster. The lovely ladies at the Philatelie centre always seem to look forward to my visits and take their time to show me everything. You can also order some of the designs online.

Old treasures

Vintage Now jumps from the world wide web into reality. Until 19th June it displays - together with na-taschen, stil-leben and Nimsay - daily its best treasures in the courtyard of Revier: clothes, bags, accessories and jewellery. Here you whet your appetite for the market on Saturday, where you can buy what caught your eye, or for a tasty cupcake by Michelle.
Daily until 19th June 11.30 am to 2 am and 7 pm to 11 pm
Market: Saturday 2 am to 8 pm, Revier
