Dance: Dancing in the dark

Usually, if you’re going to have somebody dance intimately for you, one-on-one in a private room, you would expect there to be silver poles in the vicinity and the need to have smaller denominational cash on your person to ‘make it rain’. Or so I’m told. But in the case of Eternal One Night Stand at Réunion tonight, modern dancers and art performers will be letting their freak flag fly in individual rooms, giving individual performances, to you, the individual. Entrance is free but not for the faint of heart.
Thursday 9 pm, Réunion at Random Institute

Cinema: Save with celluloid

If you’re looking at the world’s environmental, economic and political problems and wondering a) what the hell is going on? and b) where are the people who are trying to fix it? Both questions could be answered for you at Rote Fabrik over the 4-day film festival called Movies That Matter. From Thursday they’ll be showing 16 films and documentaries that highlight certain problems and, more importantly, also offer solutions. After many of the movies they’ll also have experts lead discussions and answer questions. Films include Cowspiracy, Damnation and Years of Living Dangerously. Not all of the films are in English, so check the listing to make sure you can understand the ones you’ll attend.
Thursday until Sunday various times, Rote Fabrik

Party: Beat surrender

Araab Muzik is one of the new breed of producer/dj that looks beyond the club to the vast fields of music festivals to get the people dancing. He may have all the requisite beats and samples that combine hip-hop, electronica and even pop into an explosive and pulsating sound that is uniquely his own but if you’re going to get 40,000 people paying attention to you in a sunny field you’ll need to be a dj with a live act as great as the best band, and Araab Muzik has done this time and time again. He’ll be bringing it to Exil on Saturday night with support from djs Luk LeChuck and Still Phill.
Saturday 11 pm, Exil

Sport: Bike bidding

I do believe that spring has finally sprung, and if you’re feeling the urge to ride your bike to get around town rather than the warmth of public transport but the winter months haven’t been kind to your metallic steed, then help is at hand. Throughout the year, the city fathers collect bikes that have been found abandoned on public land, they’ll give them a home, some TLC and make sure the brakes are working and then auction them off. The first of this year’s auctions, called Velogant, takes place on Saturday at the Kirchgemeindehaus near Limmatplatz. Bids start at CHF 50 and it’s cash only.
Saturday doors open 1 pm, bidding starts 1.30 pm, Kirchgemeindehaus, im Hans Bader Saal, Limmatstrasse 114, 8005

Exhibition: Art party

The new exhibition featuring large-format portraits by Swiss artist Dario de Siena called Lost Contemporary will be opening at Streetart.Limited on Saturday afternoon. The opening event itself will have the artist creating some of his stylistically unique works live in the gallery, as well as music, food, drink and a raffle for some very nice prizes.
Saturday Opening Event 1 pm to 7 pm, Exhibition until 28th March, Streetart.Limited, Badenerstrasse 735, 8048

Concert: Aussie troubadour

Jaimi Faulkner is an Australian singer/songwriter whose soulful voice and blues/folk acoustic guitar playing brought him much acclaim in his homeland before moving over to Berlin a few years ago to see if Europeans could also hear what all the fuss was about. Since then he’s been non-stop touring and recording, with his latest album produced by German hip-hop producer Ralf Mayer, of Fantastische 4 fame. Hear the fruits of this strange relationship at Bar Rossi on Wednesday evening.
Wednesday 8.30 pm, Bar Rossi

For a bite go to «The Bite»

Imagine a restaurant where you walk into and you immediately feel welcomed by the staff: One clears a place for you, another greets you with a smile and a third hops over to explain the menu. What sounds like a fantasy – especially when you live in Zurich – seems to be standard at «The Bite», which I visited for the first time a couple weeks ago. After having a bite, I wondered how I was able to miss this place all this time. It’s been open for almost two years now, it’s located just off Langstrasse, serves wonderful burgers in all kind of varieties and the service is a dream come true. Dear Bite-Team, I’ll be back. And I’ll also check out your new venue next to Hardbrücke that you plan on opening in May.
Restaurant «The Bite», Brauerstrasse 15, 8004. Closed on Monday and Sunday

Good to know: It’s getting dark: Solar eclipses on 20.3.2015
Read more

This Friday, we’re able to experience a partial solar eclipses in Zurich. Partial eclipses occur frequently but this time, the moon will cover around 70 percent of the sun in Zurich. The natural phenomena will take place between 9.20 and 11.45 am on Friday morning and you can observe it anywhere in town where you see the sun. However, there are a few points to consider. 1. Clouds: It’s very likely that we’ll have high fog. No surprise there. But there is a good chance that the sky clears up in time. To be on the safe side, head to Wallis or the Engadin. 2. Dangerous rays: Sunglasses won’t protect your eyes enough. Head to the pharmacy or local optician to buy a special set of «Sonnenbeobachtungsbrille» (what a lovely long word for your vocab). 3. Information: For an experience with added information watch it either at ETH Höngg (observation starting at 9.15 am) or at Urania observatory (from 9.10 am).

Bella Italia: Genovas at Bertastrasse
Read more

The sun is out and the whish for summer ripens in my heart. In my mind, summer is frequently linked to Italy, so when I came across Genovas at Bertastrasse (IdapIatz) it felt like holiday. The shop, run by an Italian family, is filled with delicacies from Molise in Southern Italy: from hand-made pasta and sauces to antipasti (several varieties with truffle) and from wine to oil. All products are produced by small manufacturers and cooperatives. The prices are very reasonable (most expensive red wine costs 23 francs) and everything is designed with style. Great for a dinner full of summer sun or as a gift to bring along.
Genovas, Bertastrasse 26, 8003. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 4 to 8 pm, Saturday 10 am to 8 pm
