She's Vegan? I Never Met Herbivore

Last week the World Meat Free Week took place: A week without meat. As a child i couldn’t conceive a life without meat but attitudes and cuisine has moved on so much. So if you want to try a week without meat I’ve put together a list of some of my favourite vegan treats. The journey travels through the city, and from burgers to the exotic and whilst not all of the restaurants are vegan or even vegetarian they all serve wonderful vegan food.

Sharing Is Caring

In my opinion shared plates are best at «Daizy,» in the Binz area of town. «Daizy,» turned me head to such a degree that i returned with all my friends. And everyone could find something they liked from a pretty comprehensive vegan selection. 

If you are out and about on a Thursday then i can recommend «Zum Goldenen Fass.» They serve a «Vegan Tavolata,» for an unbeatable CHF 35.

Souperman III

If you love soup then there are three great choices depending on where you are in the city. I can recommend «Beetnut» in Europaallee, «Roots» at the main station or Schanzengraben and finally, «Simply Soup» in Kreis 4 nearby Bahnhof Wiedikon.

Fancy an Indian?

If a bit of Asian spice gets the mouth watering then take tram 14 to Oerlikon and try «Dapur». Their Indonesian food will cart you to Jakarta in no time. If you prefer the taste of the sub-continent take the tram a little further…or to the opposite end of the line. Because at both ends of the 14 tram there is a «Tamarind Hill», an Indian restaurant with a great selection of vegan food. 

Something New?

My new discovery in district 4 is the Peruvian restaurant «Barranco». This is not only a dream for vegans but for all people who like good food. (read my review here) On the menu are four wonderful vegan dishes that stand as equals (or superiors,) amongst their meaty counterparts.

Buffet?

I love a buffet for lunch but in the evening too? There is a fantastic vegan buffet at «Sacred» and if you have a vegetarian boyfriend/girlfriend you’ll know, (or be sick to death of,) «Samses». There is also a fantastically priced Asian buffet at «Chimy's» which, at CHF 26  for all you can eat, is a bargain. 

Fancy a Pizza?

For vegan pizza the road always leads me to «Stripped Pizza» because the selection is as big as the taste. That reminds me, i’ll have to visit soon...

Scream For Ice Cream?

Most sorbets are vegan so you’ll find a vegan option in most gelateria. If you  want more choice (or can’t work out what’s vegan and what’s not,) the «Vegelateria» is the place for you.

My Extra Tip For The Summer: Chuck a couple of Falafel, a pita bread and hot peppers on the grill. Once the falafel and peppers are in the bread add some tomato-soy-yoghurt mix for a delicious vegan kebab. En Guete.
