Behind Closed Doors by JJ Mash: Crime novel set in Zurich
Interview with Jill Mash, author if the Zurich based crime novel "Behind Closed Doors".
Please introduce yourself: who you are, where you’re from, what brought you to Zurich and what do you do. I’m Jill Marsh and I come from Wales. Love brought me to Zürich – my husband is Swiss. As well as writing novels, I teach Business English, I’m a magazine columnist and I arrange Zürich writers’ events with Nuance Words.
What inspired you to set your crime novel in Zurich? The atmosphere of Zürich itself was the inspiration. I get the impression of a city with a deceptively calm surface, where much of the action is hidden away. That’s why this book had to be set here. Hence the title.
Is Zurich a fruitful setting for a novel? Very much so. It’s a city of contrasts, full of personality and with some dramatic extremes. For example, I was able to set one scene in Langstrasse and another on the Gold Coast.
Will the readers recognise some locations? Definitely. I’ve tried to be as accurate as I can in my representation and only taken a little poetic licence with my police station and the layout of Fraumünster.
What do you like best about living in Zurich? So many things, but probably the seasons. Each has its own identity, rituals, festivals and even food.
Which is your favourite bar? Depends on my mood, but a regular haunt is Corazon on Zähringerplatz. And the James Joyce is perfect for a quiet read.
Your favourite restaurant? I don’t eat meat, so it has to be Hiltl and its gorgeous veggie buffet. But a tip I got from your newsletter, Five Spices Thai, was also an excellent discovery. Thanks for that.
You're welcome! What is your favourite club? These days, the only clubs I frequent are book clubs.
Is Zurich a beer town? This question formed the basis of a long discussion (last Wednesday in Gonzo,) at the bar with a new friend, (some guy with long hair whose name i have forgotten.) After a healthy and (sometimes,) heated chat,

Organic food Kenya is teaching the community members to become SMART FISHERMEN/WOMEN, fishing themselves and their families out of poverty, lack of food, minimal or no illness permanently, instead of giving them fish for a day.
Organic Food Kenya is developing a farm where sustainable agriculture and permaculture are put together and the community members are involved to participate, learn, work, see ,feel ,taste, eat and implement in their own farms under the supervision of (OFOK) in making surethe transformation is achieved.
The farm is already coming up and we are committed to its success which lies on the fact that a human being is created with unlimited capability of creating things , first in the mind and then actualize through implementation and that is whatORGANIC FOOD KENYA(OFOK) stands for.
Organic Food Kenya is dedicated to promoting sustainable Agriculture and Development for the OVC and youths in total dire need. It also seeks to facilitate the youths to initiate create income generating projects, and as we all as creating development initiatives to employ them. It is starting its operations to respond to the needs of OVC and Youths who are destitute because of the AIDS epidemic. We have currently identified a total of 30 youths and children in total dire need.
PROBLEM STATEMENT/ PROJECT LOCATION
The problem at hand is that in many cases the Organic Food Kenya Family finds itself in financial needs particularly in addressing the physical, material and educational needs for themselves, OVC and the youths. In addition, some of the youths out of school are unemployed in productive venture so as to support themselves. This has not only put the project on the high risk of relying on donor and well-wishers funds to meets it basic needs, but also it will put some of the youths especially girls at an extremely high risk for contracting HIV and other STDs.
Against this background, we consultatively came up with the poultry project as income generating activity as supplementary sources of income to Organic Food Kenya. Furthermore, Organic Food Kenya seeks to provide income generation projects for the youths and community farmers, giving them an alternative way to support themselves and their dependents.
So far through the help of friends we almost done with the structure, we are now doing the floor and we need to buy the wateres, feeders, the solar light, chicks and feeds for the start..
We are in the look out of 2000 dollars to buy these requirements. Remember no donation is too small for us every penny counts.
