Once again the people of Zurich hit the polling stations and a massive issue is at stake in this referendum. Thankfully Switzerland direct democracy has returned to an almost normal cycle after delays in voting caused by covid so this Sundays referendum only has four items on the ballot. (Phew.) But…one of them is a biggie and, while i try to be impartial on these referenda, i am abandoning it in this case.
On Sunday the people of Switzerland vote to end the inequalities between same sex couples and heterosexual couples and allow marriages for all. A yes vote would allow same sex couples to marry (they can only enter into civil partnerships at the moment,) and give them equality in the eyes of the law including in issues of naturalisation, reproduction and adoption. What do i think? Of course we should allow this. About time too!
Fondue, skiing and taxes. What could be more Swiss than that? The 99% initiative calls for an increase in taxation on capital income (from shares, rental property and interest,) which would offset a decrease in income tax for lower paid employees. The initiative the brainchild of the «Jungendsozialist,» or JUSO and seems unlikely to succeed. It’s a pretty complicated issue so if you want to find out more click here.
The first city initiative is opposed to two construction projects, both of which are in the Wollishofen area of the city. The first is a cable car to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Zürcher Kantonal Bank (ZKB) and the construction of a 25 metre high building nearby. The Besonnungs Initiative argues that lakeside space should be protected and that large buildings would cast shadows over recreational areas. The AL and the Greens say this is a good idea. Everyone else thinks the opposite.
