It’s a classic French scene. A shady, tree lined town square where men in berets smoke Gauloise and play with their shiny silver balls. I’m talking of course about the game of pétanque. Now, i have never played but this summer i have resolved to give it a go. Do you want to join me? Great. You bring the Pastis and i will come up with some beautiful locations in the city as well as a couple of bonus tips.
I’ve never played so i have only the most basic understanding of the sport but there are a few experts at Zurich’s two clubs who would be able to help you. At the northern corner of Josefwiese you will find the Pétanque Club Zurich and Wollishofen has it’s very own club, the Wolliboule, which is based in the Hans Asper school. As usual, the internet is a fount of knowledge so check out the video below for a few of the basics or check out the following website.
Grow a pair? No, you don’t have to be Jason Bond or James Bourne to source the equipment to play pétanque. Every major sports shop stocks sets and it is (very) easy to find a set online. Or maybe you simply cannot wait and need to play now? Balls can be borrowed from the Pétanque Club Zurich or from the Berta bar in Idaplatz.
Where Can You Play?
The beauty of pétanque is that it can be played on almost any gravel surface. Mind you, playing it on any kind of a slope makes for a tougher challenge and probably missing balls. Try somewhere shady, with a good supply of wine or Pastis and maybe a tobacconist if that is your thing. Also, don't try to play in the middle of the road. Here’s list of some cool locations in Zurich.
