As you head to the airport you may have noticed that the trains sometimes stop at a place called Oerlikon. But has anyone ever got off the train there? Oerlikon is the home of the Hallenstadion but also some great restaurants so here are a few reasons to hop of the train and miss that flight…
If you are English, don’t be put off by the name. It’s another great Thai place that I’ve raved about before. Cozy, great food and beautiful. Make sure you try the purple iced tea with butterfly blossom, ginger and lemongrass.
Before the hangover comes sleep. Before sleep comes drinking. But between drinking and sleep? This, often blurry, space in time is filled with pita bread and kebab meat and I will move heaven and earth to get it. But where? Ayverdi is the place to go. They even do a kebab with pesto if you don’t feel you can face the chilli sauce.
While the rest of Zürich is not known for it’s amazing Indian cuisine Kreis 11 (that’s Oerlikon by the way) boasts literally hundreds….well…four good Indian restaurants. Let’s start with Kerala which is located by the radio station. It is friendly with great service and delicious food. Although they don’t serve my ultimate favourite dish, Lamb Vindaloo, I tried the Mushaka Dal. Black lentils cooked in cream and butter and served with fresh naan. A dream.
Visiting the Hallenstadion? Then have a bite at the Malabar before the gig. There is always something to laugh about with the one waiter and it is good value for money. They also do my favourite vindaloo and I must get around to attending one of their cooking classes.
A wise man once said: Eat not in a restaurant with a neon “Open” sign for it will bring great misery. Namaste proves that he is in fact a gibbering idiot. The food is really tasty and the service is incredibly friendly. Here ends the tale.
The restaurant has a very good 4.5 star rating and this has led them to expand with a new restaurant at Schaufelbergerstrasse. Because they are so busy they ask that you release the table after ninety minutes but don’t worry, there are no red or yellow cards and they don’t ask you to change ends. But other than that there is nothing to complain about. Get eating, the clock is ticking…
I always love a food market so the weekly market is a great place to visit if you are cooking at home. At the market some of the Swiss inhibitions are cast aside and it has more bustle and noise than usual. Whenever I’m here I visit a small Italian stall at the edge of the market which, for some reason, does the best Hummus. If you need meat, visit the Fiechter family. They have first-class products but also take the time to give sound food advice.
After you have shopped until you feel like dropping perhaps a cheeky beer is a good idea. Take a short tram ride on tram 11 to Fernsehstudio and visit the Brauerei Oerlikon. Great people and great beer. I love the Oerlik-Öhlsch beer, elegant and round (like my stomach) and, unlike my stomach, rounded off with a floral hops bouquet.
I love Indonesian food and so do the people in Zürich. What other reason could there be to go to Bali in the Winter? The weather? That said, there is but one Indonesian restaurant in Zürich and it goes by the name Dapur. The food is good and being vegan, there is no karmic realignment required.
Not enough bistros have their own fireplace but a nice exception is the Perron 9. As if to match the fireplace, grilled specialities are served which taste really good. You can also see the restaurant as you pull away from the station if you decide against canceling your journey…
So that's it. I can't offer a prize if you make it to all locations in one day but if you do make it you will win my respect. And probably a heart attack. Enjoy.
