I'm sure you've seen the photos on your friend's social media: It's mushroom season. Time to get your basket, organise a few friends and head to the forests. Wonderful! If you fancy trying this yourself, here's my starter-guide to mushroom picking...
Boots Leave your sneakers at home and put on some solid footwear. Mushroom gathering is very relaxing but you'll stroll off-road through the countryside.
Basket It's not a myth that many people use a basket as this gives your gathered goods enough air so they don't start to sweat. If they do, they loose protein, start to mold and become inedible.
Knife To cut or to screw? A recent study showed that it doesn't make a difference. I always take a knife to clean the mushrooms of dirt or to carve some wood. It's a forest fantasy after all.
Mushroom-App Without my granny, i recognize maybe two types of mushrooms. So, app, here you come. My favourite is Myco, which works with a detailed categorisation.
WHEN & WHERE
Location No one will share their secret spot but in general you'll find them anywhere there is a forest in sight: Uetliberg, Höggerberg, Käferberg, Züriberg or Adlisberg. However, the more remote the higher the likelihood that no other person collected them before you came by.
Dates Each kanton has its own rules. In Zurich it is forbidden to gather mushrooms between the 1st and the 10th of every month.
How much Each person is only allowed to gather 1 kg at the time.
Check If you don't trust your gut (you really shouldn't) or your app, you can bring your found funghi to an expert to check if they're all edible. This service is for free. You should never, ever eat a mushroom if you're not certain that it's edible.
I've told you before but another warning can't hurt. Fraudsters are active on all housing platforms in Switzerland. Also on my pages. Unfortunately, I can't guarantee that all offers are genuine. I do my best to blacklist any i catch but

3. Island Life
Piracy has never been much of a vocation in Zurich. The lake is far too small and there is no treasure island. Or is that strictly true? While the lake is too small for an effective Long John Silver or Jack Sparrow, it does contain a

6 years ago we welcomed 'Dini Mueter' to the Langstrasse. This summer, the bar and restaurant underwent a refurbishment and just reopened its doors with a new concept and a new name. Well, actually the new name is also the concept: Lucky
