I love a bit of cheese. Whether it’s Raclette, Fondue or just a piece of Cheddar with bread, a good culinary evening usually requires a visit to the cheese shop. But where to go? I tested out a few of the cheese shops in the city.
I can’t resist the two year old, extra ripened gruyere. And whilst your here, grab some of the old town fondue mixture. It’s made according to a secret recipe from the fifties. Chäs Chäller, Niederdorfstrasse 46
Standing in front of the counter is a pretty dizzying experience. The selection is just overwhelming and incredibly tasty. But a piece of the Testun al Barolo always finds its way home with me. Chäs und Brot, Mutschellenstrasse 197
If I get up early enough on Fridays, i stop at the Rona stand in the Helvetziaplatz Market. She sells her own delicious goat cheese from Alp Peil and an excellent Tomm de Gourze from Lavaux. Oh, or the double-cream Geissenbrie. Oh, and everything else…
Warning: Cheeses may not look exactly like the above picture.
After a philosophical and reflective walk through the woods of the Zurichberg i feel a reward for my sober and pragmatic way of life is called for. This reward comes in the shape of a large piece of cheese from the Gourmeggli. Round this off with a nice bottle of wine and some bread and the perfect meal is created. Ingrid’s Gourmeggli, Hegibachstrasse 102
(I can also highly recommend the yoghurt from Chäs Glauser and of course there is an excellent fondue mixture here too…)
Yes, Switzerland is famous for cheese and we have a lot of very good choices. It is painful to have to head over the English channel and resort to British alternatives. But there is nothing wrong with a good Stilton with a drop of sweet port. Ever. British Cheese Center, Limmatstrasse 231
Over the last 30 years, Tritt Käse has developed from an artisan alpine dairy into a market stall and then finally into a cheese shop. Their range features products exclusively that preserve century old traditions but are also somehow new and innovative. Tritt Käse im Viadukt, Limmatstrasse 231 und jeweils am Dienstag am Bürkliplatz Markt.
This small and friendly shop not only captures the charm of French speaking Switzerland but also the culinary delicacies from that part of the country. «La Religieuse», the in-house fondue mix, is definitely a hot contender for «Best Fondue in Town». Welschland, Zweierstrasse 56
