You Can't Beat Moules et Frites

Some things just work well together. Love and marriage, a horse and carriage, beer and….well…everything. But one of the my favourite parts of life in Zurich is the annual classic combination of «moules-frites» or mussels and chips for the English out there. Here’s my guide to getting your hands on some this autumn.

Seebad Enge: Great Views
Summer is over (at least that’s the way it seems,) and the Badi at Seebad Enge makes its autumnal metamorphosis into a bistro. For 30 days they serve fresh moules à l'italienne or à la crème with french fries. At present all the seats are sold out however there is a waiting list. If a place becomes available they will let you know.

Dani H.: All You Can Eat
It always amazes me what the Dani H. team produce from their little kitchen. Delectable mussels, crunchy fries, all served with a fantastic dry white wine. Still hungry? Then order some more. Not surprisingly places are limited so make sure you book.

Piazza: The Middle Of Wiedikon

The tranquil backdrop of Idaplatz provides a relaxing location in which to gorge on these delicious molluscs. Piazza has a beautiful location and close to the city centre as well.

Les Halles: The Classic

The secret location that everybody now knows about: Les Halles. I go back every year for their classic moules & frites. It's a super location, great vibe and tastes great. You wont be alone though so book ahead.

Brasserie Lipp: The Other Classic
If Brasserie Lipp knows about anything, it is french cuisine and of course, mussels are a big part of it. First class moules with first class service and maybe a bit of lobster to follow it up.

Schiwago: Der neue alte Bekannte
The Moules et Frites in the Ticino cellar on Neufrankengasse were fantastic but the chef from back then, Christian Egger, has since opened the Schiwago in Wiedikon and has brought the mussel tradition with him. It’s also worth a visit for its amazing terrace which brings a new meaning to the word «greenhouse.»

Brasserie Louis: Dinner & DrinksBrasserie Louis not just boasts an amazing floor but its plethora of mirrors makes it a narcissists paradise. But it also does delicious mussels with five different varieties. After you’ve eaten fit to burst waddle up the stairs and sip a cocktail in the cosy Tina Bar. A perfect evening, no?

Mère Catherine: A taste of ProvenceBetween the beautiful houses of the idyllic Nägelihof, the Mère Catherine captivates with charm and dishes from Provence. From September to February you can also enjoy their highly praised moules et frites - marinière (the classic version) or du jour (the daily changing version). Bon appétit!
