Zurich (EN) : Thursday, 4.12.08: Sounds of Zurich, cheese & Dr Zhivago

Radio Ga Ga: airs live from now until Christmas - you might remember this temporary radio station from last autumn, when it was broadcast from the Landesmuseum. This year, you can watch the shows being made at Strehlgasse 21 or listen to the music channel via the website, cable frequencies or internet stream.
1 - 24 Dec,
Your best piece: Bring your favourite vinyl (only) to Helsinki and DJs Navok and Sanfilippo will spin it on their desks. You‘re even allowed to introduce it with a few words – and English is as welcome as German. Take a trip down memory lane.
Thursday 8 pm, Helsinki

Sounds of Zurich: This Friday is all about Zurich's electro and techno music scene. Hive celebrates the 6th anniversary of Zurich’s music label Grundton with Toktok and The Passive resistance live, while 6 Zurich-based DJs rotate their sets at Zukunft. If you’d like a taster, DJ Dejan and are 2 of the 6.
Friday 23 pm, Hive
Friday midnight, Zukunft
More Zurich music: Zurich's music scene has more to offer than just electro and techno and Saturday proves the point. Reggae singer Phenomden presents his latest album Gangdalang, a diverse modern roots album, at Aktionshalle at Rote Fabrik. And indie pop band Luxus rock are on at Talackerbar, a little known location for concerts (but well known for cheap drinks).
Saturday 9 pm, Aktionshalle
Saturday 10 pm, Talacker
Nobel-prized literature: Dr Zhivago is one of the best-known political novels of the 20th century and if you’ve never got around to reading the book, this Sunday at Filmpodium you can watch the classic 60s film adaptation, which won 5 Oscars. It's about the life of a Russian doctor and poet who, although married, falls for a political activist's wife and endures the hardships of the Bolshevik Revolution.
Sunday 2.30 pm, Filmpodium
Weeknight affair
Down under: Pete Murray, Australia’s guitar superstar, performs on Tuesday at Abart. It's not only his first gig in Switzerland but also an exclusive acoustic concert. The demand for Murray's only show in Switzerland was huge, so it was moved from the smallish Hafenkneipe to larger Abart. The concert is sold out but maybe you're able to wangle a ticket at the door.
Tuesday 7.30 pm, Abart
Good to know
Cheesy winter: What would a winter be without cheese? Nothing! For those who find the smell of matured cheese too strong or are even repulsed by it, I suggest visiting one of the many fondue or raclette venues in town. Or if you’re at home, try putting coffee powder in a dish in the living room, which will absorb a lot of the odour. To give a good guide we put all restaurants – and more - on a winter map (download the latest edition, scroll down to page 15). Cheese on a fork: Fondue is offered in many venues during the cold season. Two hot addresses are Chässtube Rehalp at Forchstrasse 359 (no. 11) and the Fribourger Fonduestübli at Rotwandstrasse 38 (no. 12). No great surprise to learn that both are owned by the same couple who just concentrate on fondues. My personal favourite is Restaurant Kornhaus on Limmatplatz at Langstrasse 243 (no. 10). Just next to C&A it's a locale that most don't notice. It's a treasure but not fancy at all. On the regular's table they smoke and loudly discuss their gripes speak of who’s acted like an idiot (a Schafseckel) but the fondue is great. Spoon your cheese: When it comes to raclette it's the same as espresso or bratwurst - everyone has a favourite place. So here’s mine, if you're looking for the most traditional atmosphere with the best melted cheese try Raclette Stube at Zähringerstrasse 16 (no. 13) or Chäsalp at Tobelhofstrasse 236 (no. 14). If you fancy watching tourists tackling the bizarre Swiss speciality you should eat at Hotel Adler at Rosengasse 10 (no. 15). DIY: For a cheese fest at home look no further than the Raclette Suisse website. Here, as well as reading a variety of recipes, you can also rent as many ovens as you need.
Meat, meat, meat: Restaurant La Côte pays homage to French cuisine before the portions became “nouvelle” (tiny and healthy). One of the house's specialities is Charbonnade, a meat orgy of wafer thin beef which sizzles in front of you on a tabletop grill. It's all you can eat for as long as the coals are hot. Order fries as side dish; they are the best in the whole world!
The longest website: Thanks to Andy, one of our subscribers!  If you visit the page you’ll automatically get an entry on it. In this way the page gets longer and longer until it’ll be the longest in the world. There is also a country ranking, so let’s push Switzerland.
