Good Morning Ronster

It’s the first of December and you Ronsters know what that means:

’Tis the season to drink Glühwein

Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Drink it down, until you feel fine

Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la

It is, of course, time to get ready for Christmas so i have a few shopping opportunities for you. And, as it’s a new month, we have a new illustrator joining us. So…have a great weekend and…

Give my love to the city

Shopping tip: Finnish Furniture and Food

You might know the Danish «Hygge», but have you heard of the Finnish «Kotona»? It means «at home» and it represents the cozy and content feeling you get when you are cocooning in your own place. If your home is not quite there yet, you can create this feeling of «Kotona» by filling your home with Finnish handcrafted furniture and other home-items from the Suomi PopUp starting today. You also get to have a taste of Nordic cuisine with pasties and cinnamon rolls from the PopUp Café in the same location. You have to hurry though because the PopUp only runs for three days, until Saturday!

Film: A Week For Human Rights

International Human Rights Day takes place on 10 th of December, and in this context, Kosmos is hosting the 8 th Human Rights Film Festival starting today. The programme is a mix of documentaries and fiction films, exploring human rights issues including migration LGBTI-rights, women’s rights and more. The six-day programme includes fascinating films, like The Visitors, about an anthropologist who moves to Svalbard to study how life in polar regions is changing with climate change, Casablanca beats, about Morcoccon teenagers’ use of rap and hip-hop to reject tradition, and Rotzloch, a Swiss film about the life of young refugee men who are starting a new life in the Swiss countryside. You can get your tickets on the website or on location at Kosmos.

Festival: You Matter But Sound Matters Too

It’s not just film festivals this week though. This Thursday sees the start of the Sonic Matter Festival which is presenting some pretty interesting and diverse music in a variety of Zurich’s wonderful venues. There’s interactive installations at Rote Fabrik, electronica in Walcheturm and Orchestral music in the Tonhalle. In fact there is too much to mention here so check out their full program or have a listen on their live radio link.

Shopping tip: Working Like Dynamos

’Tis the season for the wonderful Christmas markets that Switzerland has to offer, (scroll down to find out more,) but if you prefer something a little more alternative then Dynamo are hosting their own «Weihnachtsmarkt» this Saturday and Sunday. The market will present hand made items, lovingly created by local craftspeople. But they do stick to some traditions. Grab a Glühwein and go shopping!

There are people who like movies, in moderation, and then there are those who edge on obsession, memorizing movie lines by heart, working on watching the full oeuvre of different directors, and giving movie recommendations to people who never asked for it. I definitely count myself to the latter group. If you do as well, i have some happy news for you. The Volkshaus is hosting a Film and Comic Exchange, where you can find rare movie posters, original star photographs, models, DVDs and curiosities from movies like Batman and James Bond. It takes place between 10am and 5pm, but if you want to strike gold you should be there in the morning!

Sport: My God, They're Brave

It seems that plunging into ice cold water is all the rage these days, what with Wim Hof and that bit in 1899 on Netflix and…er…that scene at the end of Titanic. Okay, i’m clutching at straws here but i do doff my Christmas hat to anyone who will take the plunge into the icy waters of the Limmat. Which brings me to the «Samiclaus Schwimmen» this Sunday. That’s right folks, people actually dress up like Santa and swim down the river and whilst you can no longer enter, you can head over and watch in amazement with a warm glühwein in hand.

The Mercury Prize is arguably the most prestigious award in the British music industry and if you click on the link you’ll know that the winner this year was rapper, «Little Simz», for her album, «Sometimes I Might Be Introvert». Wouldn’t it be lovely to see her live? Well, we’re in luck as she will be hitting the stage at the Volkshaus this Tuesday. Now i don’t have space to write about her full career here but suffice to say, it’s been eventful. Check out the video of her performing at this years BRIT awards.

Comic im December: Carla Haslbauer

For the last time this year: New month, new comic happiness. The wonderful Carla Haslbauer brings us the final issue with her lovely and enchanting illustrations. I talked to her about her love of shopping-crazy fish, her dream job as a «Christkind», (it's a Swiss/German/Austrian thing,) and the difficulties of her demanding work.
