Dirty Dancing «lift» scene has become so iconic that a footballer from Englands Premier League lifted a cardboard cutout of himself à la Johnny Castle and Baby. And tonight you can enjoy this classic film moment all over again, with cocktails, as
Dolder Wellen Kino are showing the movie tonight. And for some lucky Ronsters i have a two pairs of tickets to give away. Click the link below to let me know why it would be the time of your life.
Thursday, 8:30pm, Dolder Wellen Kino, Adlisbergstrasse 36, 8044
Summerbar at Kanzlei is a great place to enjoy a drink in the sunshine and this Thursday they are making a great deal better with the addition of some live music. Zurich’s own
Ben McNamara is going to be
singing some tuneful tunes with his acoustic guitar as accompaniment.
Thursday 4:30pm, Kanzlei Summerbar, Kanzleistrasse 56, 8004
On this particular weekend a trip out of town may appeal to (some,) Ronsters so why not take the short train ride to Winterthur and enjoy some live music at the
Musikfestwochen which started yesterday and runs until the 21st of August. For obvious reasons the
program is lighter on international acts this year but there are still some great artists from all over the world appearing on the
numerous stages scattered around the city centre.
Thurs - Sun 21st, Musikfestwochen, Winterthur.
Fri, Sat & Sun, Lethargy, Rote Fabrik, Seestrasse 407, 8038
Anything happening in the city on Saturday? Let me think. Oh yeah, it’s the biggest party of the year, and as it’s the first one since 2019 i’m pretty sure it’s going to be even more massive than usual. I am talking of course about
Street Parade, where literally millions of people take to the streets to dance, drink and be generally merry. As well as the
main stage at Bellevue there are several
smaller stages dotted around the city and
Zurich’s clubs take over from midnight onwards. If you have never seen
Street Parade then it is something to behold but be careful out there too. Here are a couple of tips:
1. Don’t wear flip flops. Lots of glass, rubbish, unpleasant fluids and other people treading on you.
2. Stay Hydrated. It’s gonna be hot, hot, hot on Saturday. 3. Don’t Get Too Wasted. Street Parade is a marathon not a sprint. There’s no point in being out of it by 4pm and missing the rest of the day. 4. Have Fun!
Saturday 1pm, Street Parade, Various Locations.
After a pretty heavy weekend some live music can help beat the Monday blues. This Monday
Mascotte are presenting US rock band
Ty Segall & The Freedom Band. The band combines grunge/garage sounds with psychedelia: Think Strokes/White Stripes/Vines! They are also supported by a band with one of my favourite names. Switzerland’s own
«Tesla Death Ray.» Have a listen to the band here.
Monday 8pm, Mascotte, Theaterstrasse 10, 8001
The other day i took a relaxing swim in the Limmat and two things struck me. Firstly the water is really, really warm. And secondly it is really flowing very slowly. Normally the current would take you from Dynamo to Stazione Paradiso very quickly but, at this point in time, you have to swim. (Some people were even swimming upstream.)
«So what?» I hear you cry. Well, the lack of flow in the river means that whatever ends up in the river hangs around for longer. But that's not the only flow we have to think about. With a million people arriving on Saturday for Street Parade it’s not unreasonable to expect that a bit of tinkle might find its way into the river along with all the substances that have been imbibed.
While it might be tempting to have a dip in the (probably deserted,) Letten those in the know give it a pretty wide berth after the Street Parade and do so for quite a few days. If you need to go swimming on Sunday my advice is to head towards Thalwil or Erlenbach and use some of the many lovely «Badis» there.
Barranco? Or how about
Josef? I love these restaurants but it’s the devils own job getting a reservation and, i admit it, i’m terrible at planning ahead. But one of the many blessings of Zurich’s school holidays is that restaurants that have three week waiting lists have availability. If you haven’t tried these restaurants then now is the time. And summer vegetables always taste better anyway.
