Causes: Spread Some Love

As the run up to Christmas approaches, as well as socialising it’s also a good time to reflect on those less fortunate than ourselves. Zurich has around 1000 people living in asylum centres, many of whom have escaped war torn countries and are now living in a country where they may not even understand the language. Thankfully, through zuerischekt.ch, you can do a little bit to make them feel welcome, either by making a donation or creating a Christmas package with some gifts and a card. It’s a great way to spread a bit of joy at this time of year.

Shopping tip: The New Wave Of Talent

Switzerland has a lot of talented young creatives and we are all in need of unique and interesting Christmas presents. I wish there were a way of connecting us. Actually there is as Toni Märt, which is taking place today at the ZhDK in the Toni Areal, is providing a place for the designers and manufacturers of the future to flaunt their wares. We’re talking jewellery, cosmetics, ceramics, art…the whole bit.

Party: Buzzing Again

What better way to forget the troubles of the world than dancing right the way through the night? Thankfully Hive is able to help this weekend with their Grundton Festival, taking place on Friday and Saturday night. They really do have a bewilderingly large array of DJ’s including some great international acts.

Party: All My Friends

Or perhaps you prefer your parties to be a bit more alternative? If that is case then head along to the Provitreff for an evening of traditional Arabic food, (vegan, vegetarian or with meat but whatever: Arabic food is always yummy, ) and a line up of 5 DJ’s. All my friends are here, let’s party.

Shopping tip: Comics Are For Grown Ups Too

Are comics for kids or adults? Or just for nerds? Well, i love graphic novels such as Tintin and Asterix as much as i did as a child as well as the more sophisticated themes in the output of Marvel and DC comics. (Does this make me a nerd?) If you are a comic lover too, (or if you just want to find out more,) then the Volkshaus is hosting the 38th Zürcher Comic Börse on Saturday. Be there and be square.

Saturday 10am, Volkshaus, Stauffacherstrasse 60, 8004

Good to know: Better Check This Friday

We’ve all got a story about missing an appointment due to missing the change to summer or winter time, don’t we? Zurich’s public transport network gives you a second opportunity to dine out on a missed meeting/date/flight story with the timetable changes which come into effect this Friday.

Please make sure that you check that your normal connections are still valid before you travel rather than standing in the rain waiting for a tram that had already left. (like i have done…many times!)

And for the night owls: Timetable changes take place for the night network on Friday 17th of December so please check your connections before you stumble out of the club/party/gig/one-night stand.

Eating: Say Cheese Again

Eating: Say Cheese Again

It’s cold out and winter is upon us so it is time for that most Swiss winter tradition, fondue. So i have come up with a few of my favourite locations around the city for this cheesy treat. Now, if you are a tourist or are new to fondue don’t let the locals fool you. There is no horrible penance to losing your bread such as the one pictured above... okay, maybe a shot of schnapps or two.
