Zurich (EN) : Zurich 02.12.2021: Finland, South Africa & Absinthe

Good Morning Ronster

It’s the second day of advent and Christmas cheer abounds. Now is the time to enjoy a mulled wine with friends. Or why not try an Absinthe? Or why not visit some Christmas markets? Whatever you do this weekend wrap up warm, have a great weekend and…

Give my love to the city.

Film: Rights On Film

I love film. And i love human rights. It’s a pity that half the people in the world only seem to have access to one or the other. Thankfully there are some great filmmakers who are bringing these injustices to the big screen at Zurich’s own Human Rights Film Festival which is taking place between the 2nd and 5th of December at Kosmos. Click here for the full program.

Eating: Absinthe And Bread

What does one do with an ice-cream store in winter? Answer: Open it up as a pop up. And a pop up that serves special sandwiches and absinthe sounds like one that would suit me and Van Goch down to the ground. Gastronoptikum, which will reside in Gelati Tellhof, describes itself as having «The best vermouths in Switzerland, luscious slices of bread, curious things and characters…» And it certainly seems that way with a fascinating selection of food and drinks.

Shopping tip: Finnish It

Looking for some stylish Christmas gifts? Fortunately Finnish design pop-up Suomi is opening it’s doors with work from a curated selection of Finnish creatives living in Switzerland. Children’s clothing and accessory shop mustikka.ch, (i think it means blueberry in Finnish,) in Europaalle plays host.

Party: Get Down The Gym Santa

Can you imagine Santa Claus working his lats, pumping his guns and shredding his nards? Probably not, especially when you look at the size of him. But Holmes Place, the one occupying the airspace over Jelmoli anyway, are going to try to entice Santa in for a workout with their Santa’s Rooftop Party. If you see him, rip the glühwein from his hands and send him downstairs for an hour of cardio.

There have been a few recent exports from South Africa that we could probably do without but superstar DJ Black Coffee isn’t one of them. The multiple award winning and Grammy nominated Durban born DJ will hit the stage at Kaufleuten this Saturday with his African infused house set. Check the video out.

Sport: You've Got To Be Kidding...

Imagine going for a swim in the river in this weather. Well, this Sunday that is exactly what some of the good, (crazy in my opinion as well,) folks of Zurich are going to do. If you are a braver soul than me, grab your Santa hat and go for a swim at the Zürich Samiclaus-Schwimmen. Alternatively, (and i suspect this may be the majority of Ronsters,) grab a warm beverage and watch in amazement as the Santa hats bob their way along the Limmat.

Eating: The Plants Went In Two By Two

I normally associate pop-ups with short stays but plant based restaurant Anoah is going to be with us for a while. They’ll be throwing their doors open on Wednesday and will remain with us right the way until the end of August. The restaurant offers a 5 course menu that looks delicious and, of course, the team are passionate about serving fresh, local sourced organic products.

Good to know: They're Back. The Merry Markets

Winter is most definitely here and the countdown to Christmas has begun. On your marks, get set…shop! But Christmas is not just an orgy of consumerism. It’s a time to meet friends, drink a few drinks and enjoy winds icy breath. Fortunately Christmas markets allow you to shop, socialise and get freezing cold, all at the same time. Here is a list of my favourite Zurich markets and a bonus one that is out of town.
