Festival: Zurich Goes Film Crazy

In case you haven’t seen the posters, temporary constructions and trams covered with Daniel Craig’s visage then i’ll tell you. This week is the start of the Zurich Film Festival which will run from Thursday until Sunday the 3rd of October. Of course, there is tons of events but i am particularly excited about the premier of the new James Bond film on Tuesday, (the same day as its world premier in London,) and the presentation of the ZFF golden icon award to Sharon Stone before a screening of the Martin Scorcese film, Casino.

Once again Theatre Ida, which is located way out west in the Basislager, have two artists in residence, Katy Schutte and Rachel Blackman and the pair of them, (known as Katy and Rach,) will be performing improvised theatre, teaching workshops and generally having a fine old time of it. They’ll be at the Theatre Ida until the 3rd of October so head on down and check 'em out.

Eating: Let's Fondue It Again

There is an air of inevitability about autumn. As the Earth makes one more orbit around the sun the nights draw in, the evenings become colder and, of course, the people of Zurich lunge for a Fondue. This Thursday (and until the end of October,) the Rimini Bar down by the Schanzengraben opens its very own Fondue Stübli. The only way to see more melted cheese is to leave your Ed Sheeran records in the sun.

Comedy: Don't Get Offended

Zurich’s Comedians are really trying to make up for lost time and are on a mission to have you lovely Ronsters rolling in the aisles. This Friday Comedy Nights Zurich, Ahmet Bilge and the ever amusing A.S.S are hosting an evening of gallows humour about terrible things. If you are easily offended then, in their own words, better not come to The Zurich Offensive.

Friday 7:30pm, Wunderbox, Brauerstrasse 7, 8004

Shopping tip: Brand New Second Hand

This Saturday is the final Kreisflohmi this year but this one really must be the best on account of the number of locations. This time Kreis 10, featuring Wipkingen and Höngg, are the hosts with offerings from the Letten right the way over to Rütihof.

But that’s not all. Saturday is also Second Hand Day which aims to create a circular economy with more re-use and recycling and therefore less waste and less emissions. Many of their locations are existing stores and some are offering special discounts on Saturday.

Good to know: Don't Get This One Wrong Switzerland

Once again the people of Zurich hit the polling stations and a massive issue is at stake in this referendum. Thankfully Switzerland direct democracy has returned to an almost normal cycle after delays in voting caused by covid so this Sundays referendum only has four items on the ballot. (Phew.) But…one of them is a biggie and, while i try to be impartial on these referenda, i am abandoning it in this case. Click the button to find out more.

Good to know: A Bunch Of Animals On The Streets

The other day as i was taking a walk on the Käferberg i saw a fox walking fearlessly along the path towards me. It then occurred to me that the path i was on was named, Fuchspass or fox pass in English. As we share the city with so much wildlife i was inspired to create a map of all the animal inspired street names in the city. Although i can’t promise you will see the animals named (pretty unlikely on Elefantenweg,) it’s still pretty interesting. Here are Zurich’s most animalistic streets.
