Zurich (EN) : Zurich 03.06.2021: Wine, Beer & No Kebabs

Good morning Ronster

Hooray, we're into June, the sun has been shining and last week's announcement from the Bundesrat means that, even if it’s raining, we can go out for a meal. If you are blissfully unaware of the relaxing of restrictions then you can read all about it here.

Thank you to all the people that entered the Ticino book competition. Unfortunately there can only be three winners but if you want to buy a copy of the book (it’s great by the way,) then you can do so here. Thanks again to Iwona Eberle for offering the books as prizes. Have a great weekend and….

Give my love to the city.

Film: Yesh, Why Not?

It seems that film festivals are like buses. You don’t see one for ages then two turn up at once. Starting today, it is the turn of Yesh, the film festival that showcases new and up and coming films and film makers. There is a whopping 33 films on offer at Houdini, Riff Raff and Arthouse cinemas.

Thurs 3rd - Thurs 10th, Yesh, Kino Houdini, Riff Raff & Arthouse

If you are living in Zurich and don’t own a bike then it is high time you got one. It is, by far, the best way to get around the city. If you don’t have a bike then get down to the Velobörse on Saturday morning. A perfect place to pick up a shiny new set of wheels or trade in your old one.

Saturday 8pm, Velobörse, Helvetiaplatz, 8004

Drinking: BEER! Now that I have you attention...

Everyone loves festivals and everyone loves beer. Zum Frischen Max are combining them with a, that’s right, Beer Festival in their garden up in Oerlikon. It’s a great opportunity to try a few more beers from around the world and there is a ten franc meal voucher included in the ticket price. Have fun and drink as responsibly as you can after five beers.

Saturday 4:30pm, Zum Frischen Max, Max-Frisch-Platz, 8050

It’s been a while since i have been able to write about any live comedy events but thankfully i can this week. This Sunday the Alehouse - Palmhof host their very own comedy showcase. Six acts get a ten minute slot and with a couple of delicious craft beers inside you it is sure to be a cracking night.

Sunday 7pm, Alehouse Palmhof, Universitätstrasse 23, 8006

I am a big fan of natural wine and when i heard about specialists, Studio Vino in Wiedikon, of course i had to write about it. Well if natural wine is still a mystery to you then Studio Vino are inviting Emilio Foradori, the son of renowned producer Elisabetta Foradori, to expertly guide us though some of their wares with a tasting event on Monday evening. I’ll see you there…

Monday 6pm, Studio Vino, Meinrad-Lienert-Strasse 7, 8003

Concert: Classical Meets Jazz

It is a difficult thing to merge jazz and classical music but the Monstein Ensemble has managed to square that particular circle with some interesting music that appeals not just to jazz purist but to us ordinary folk. Drummer Dimitri Monstein’s neoclassical/jazz group open the Moods Jazz Barrage jam session on Wednesday.

Wednesday 8:30pm, Moods, Schiffbauplatz, 8005

Eating: Not That Zuki

Do any of you Ronsters know what a «Gözleme» is? Well, i would enlighten you but i think it’s better to learn by doing so head down to the new (it’s been open since April,) Anatolian takeaway Zuki’s. Now Turkish cuisine has always been associated with a late night trip to the kebab shop (Their moto is TBND or Turkish But No Doner!) but at Zuki’s there is a more delicate flavour with home made stews and soups that tantilize the tastebuds with subtle herbs and spices. If you are nearby to Hallwylerplatz and fancy a spot of lunch i can really recommend it.
