Sport: YOLO, So Play Polo

The glamour of Polo. The horses, the champagne, the bicycles…hang on, the bicycles? This weekend, the Dolder Sports centre is hosting the European Hardcourt Bikepolo Championships and it looks a lot more fun and down to earth than its equestrian counterpart. The names of the wildcard teams are worth looking up alone. My personal favourite: Flowery Twats.

Festival: They're Letten Us Party, We Hope

I can only assume that the organisers of Lettenfest read my article about tinkle in the Limmat. This can be the only reason that they postponed the Lettenfest for a week. That, and the weather forecast which turned out to be incredibly inaccurate. This week they are going to have another go, with live music, DJ’s, grilled food and drinks at the Primitivo, Dynamo, and all the venues along that stretch of the river. Pray for sunshine.

Comedy: Best For Jest

As the organisers of the Lettenfest are flakier than the bedsheets in a leper colony, there is an alternative on Saturday night if the weather is bad. Comedy Nights Zurich are hosting their open mic night, which is being held at one of their favourite venues and, in this instance, the price if definitely right. It’s free. Any aspiring stand ups are also welcome to request a spot via the Facebook page.

Sport: Iron Mad Men

Enjoy watching others suffer? Then attend the Ironman event at Landiwiese this Sunday. Seriously though, you’ve got to doff your cap to people that will swim 3.8km, cycle 180km and then round it off by running a marathon. Crazy. It is also worth noting that if you wish to go for a swim at Landiwiese this weekend you might not be able to make it to the water on account of all those pesky Ironmen. Best search for an alternative swimming hole.

TrashHero. I love the concept and i love the work that they do for everyone to keep our local environment clean, habitable and beautiful. If you are one of the special people that puts their money where their mouth is and wants to act, rather than talk, then they are getting together on Sunday to do a spot of cleaning.

Concert: Everyone Runs An Amber Light

Yay, another exciting gig in Zurich. This Monday, indie rockers Amber Run make the journey from the English, midland city of Nottingham and hit the stage at the Papiersaal. A great mix of indie rock with a trip hop flavour mixed in too. Check it out.

Good to know: Balls Of Steel

It’s a classic French scene. A shady, tree lined town square where men in berets smoke Gauloise and play with their shiny silver balls. I’m talking of course about the game of pétanque. Now, i have never played but this summer i have resolved to give it a go. Do you want to join me? Great. You bring the Pastis and i will come up with some beautiful locations in the city as well as a couple of bonus tips.

Out Of Town: Pirates Of The Zurisee

Piracy has never been much of a vocation in Zurich. The lake is far too small and there is no treasure island. Or is that strictly true? While the lake is too small for an effective Long John Silver or Jack Sparrow, it does contain a small island paradise.
