Opening «Thomas Mann in America»

The German author Thomas Mann (1875-1955) spends fourteen years exiled in America: while the Nazi regime revokes his citizenship, the Nobel laureate is greeted enthusiastically in his new home. Here, Mann speaks as the ambassador of a different, more cultivated Germany. His lecture tours are attended by tens of thousands, and his appeals to abandon Hitler are broadcast into totalitarian Germany. However, faced with the rise of anti-communism after the end of World War II, Mann becomes increasingly doubtful of his adopted home country. “Thomas Mann in America” presents diaries, manuscripts and letters; speeches, radio addresses and photographs; as well as material on the three novels “Joseph the Provider,” “Doctor Faustus” and “The Good Sinner,” which are written during the years in exile, 1938-1952. 18.30 | Kirche St. Peter Introduction by the curators Rémi Jaccard and Philip Sippel Welcoming speech by Katrin Bedenig, head of the Thomas-Mann-Archiv of ETH Zurich Speech of Lukas Bärfuss: «Thomas Manns Exil als Exempel» In public, Thomas Mann fully rises in his function and disappears behind the mask of a writer. His life is the perfection of citizenship and at once its nemesis, the fulfillment in extrangement and exile. Afterwards | Strauhof Opening of the exhibition and aperitif
