Non-stop shops: 24 hour party people need 24 hour places to shop. New York may be known as the “city that never sleeps” but Zurich is waking up – slowly. Here's my list of the city's shops that never shut. Bäckerei Happy, Dienerstrasse 32, 8004: This bakery is open 365 days a year, 24 hours on Saturdays and Sundays and weekdays from midnight to 9 pm. Bellevue Apotheke, Theaterstrasse 14, 8001: Pills and potions 24 hours a day every day of the year. Alreel Key Service: Just call 044 433 22 13 any time day or night and you’ll be in your snug situ before you know it. Expressshop, Langstrasse 126, 8004: Alcohol and (very) basic foodstuffs sold 24 hours from Monday to Saturday.
Protest Song: The Music Monkeys
During my little trip I came across a jam session in the middle of nowhere. One of the musicians gave me a cd with their protest song. The Music Monkeys, a band from Zofingen protest against the “club dying”. In every city, people move into central areas to be close to what’s happening and then complain about the noise until the clubs have to close. Their original version is dedicated to the Goldener Ochsen in Zofingen, a place which I used to frequent regularly in my youth. But their adapted version applies to all cities in Switzerland. So I’m happy to share their song with you. You’ll find a translation of the lyrics on below. Listen
Protestsong - lyrics
Music: The Music Monkeys / Text: O.L.I.
1
At the edge of a town, in a corner of the canton
In a house with many windows, in the middle where one lives
Leak sound into the streets, which are mostly empty
For some it’s music, for others just noise.
2
In a room where bodies groove, to the crowd of people and noise
Is where the hearts have space to talk and say: I like you
That doesn’t happen when it’s quiet, as the heart doesn’t talk in silence
Just when it’s loud and jumpy, will it bear its heart
3
We made a sound, that is forbidden
You make creatures deaf, which is allowed
We were just loud, and almost imprisoned
While you make culture bleed, but with permission
Refrain
If you don’t like snow, don’t move to the mountains
If you don’t like sand, don’t travel to the beach
If you can’t stand noise, don’t live central
And if you don’t let us party, you should be banned
4
This game goes back and forth for generations
That a thing makes one happy, and the other complains
That one bothers what others do, just because he doesn’t understand
He gets restive and prohibitive that such a thing can go on
5
In a country full of witty mind, we follow the rule of silence
Some yield to their master and the others are busy
But it needs room to be loud, so people stay patient
Curfews are just woven silver, while the party is made of gold
6
We made a sound, is that forbidden?
You steel the zest of life, is that allowed?
We were just loud, and almost imprisoned
While you make culture bleed, but with permission
Refrain
If you don’t like snow, don’t move to the mountains
If you don’t like sand, don’t travel to the beach
If you can’t stand noise, don’t live central
And if you don’t let us party, you should be banned
This is a protest song – wanting culture without limit
This is a protest song – in the name of music
