Picture the scene: You’re running late for work, tapping your toes at the tram stop while you wait to get to the daily grind. You catch the eye of an attractive girl/guy across the tramlines and you stifle a little smile, just as the next tram roars into view. Later, in a spare moment over lunch you wonder about what could have been. Well, my friends, the Brief/ Missed Encounters section of our City Page is for you. Let her/him know that they’re on your mind and post a message – then sit back and let fate decide.
Give my love to the city

 Concert
Concert Blasted: Not many electronic acts are blasted into public consciousness by Justice. But Midnight Juggernauts from Australia are an exception to every rule, supporting the French duo and presenting their very own sound, somewhere between ELO, CAN, Air and M83. Critical acclaim has come from sources like NME and Drowned in Sound and they’ve topped international ‘Best of’ lists with their album Dystopia – Ed Banger’s mainman Busy P describes it as the year’s best album. See them at Hive.
Thursday 9 pm, Hive
 Gig
Acoustic Americana: Conor Oberst is one of the key figures in the US 'Nu Acoustic Music’ movement. With new musicians, The Mystic Valley Band and a new project, his lush new album crosses folk/indie/country genres and was recorded in Tepoztlán, Morales, Mexico. They’ll be playing tracks from the eponymous record at Rote Fabrik at the Sky Larkin Concert.
Friday, 9 pm Rote Fabrik
 Exhibition/Party
Exhibition/Party Insomnia relief: There are times when even the soundest sleeper simply can’t doze off. If you’re a nightowl like me and the idea of clubbing on Saturday leaves you blubbing then trundle to the Long Night of the Museums at the Kunsthaus. “Craziness” is the theme this year, with late night artworks, readings, portraits and guided tours topped-off with a party hosted by fashion magazine Bolero until 5 am.
Saturday, 7 pm – 5 am Kunsthaus Zurich
 Party On
Zurich’s smallest nightclub: Superzero at Zähringerstrasse 39 hosts a night where hip hop meets electro and dance meets meditation. You won’t fail to hit the dancefloor (it’s a very small venue), with DJs like Robosonic from Berlin, and Zurich’s own DJs Vangelis and Jewl.
Saturday, midnight Superzero
 Event
Event Homesick: No matter how integrated you’ve become since reading Ron Orp’s Mail, there are times when a taste of home is just what you need. If you’re craving any familiar products or services from home (I hear that the lack of Marmite is getting some of you down) or need some new ones to settle in, then head to Expat Expo at Zurich’s Kongresshaus to get your fix. Admission is free.
Sunday, 11 am – 5 pm Kongresshaus Zurich
 Electric Activity
Dorkbotswiss: presentations are fun, informal chats by artists and cultural commentators lasting about twenty minutes, including questions. Dorkbotswiss is perfect for those with short attention spans. The chosen topic is "strange people doing strange things with and without electricity". Entrance is free and (so they say) exit is too!
Wednesday, 8 pm Kunstraum Walcheturm
Kunstraum Walcheturm
 Good to Know
Good to Know Street art in our city: New residents to Zurich often comment with surprise at the amount of graffiti that seems present on the walls of Switzerland’s biggest city. Nowadays the attitudes those in charge seem to have softened towards the street art. However, this wasn’t always so. During the 1970s Harald Naegeli, known as the "Sprayer of Zurich", was arrested for painting nearly a thousand simple wiry figures as a political response to a growing sense of anonymity in the city. While intellectuals and artists valued his work, he was forced into exile and was eventually extradited and imprisoned for nine months in 1984. Today his work is recognised as art by those same authorities, who now seek to restore what’s left. The next generation of artists has picked up where he left off and some like Tika from Zurich are even making an international name for themselves – Tika’s work now adorns walls in Mexico and Rio.

 Gen X Genius
Gen X Genius Dude: It’s a decade since the Coen Brothers The Big Lebowski hit the screens. Now that cardigans are fashionable for men this season, lovers of the film might head to their nearest Brockenhaus to pick up a Dude-style beige and brown zigzag cable knit. If Zurich life isn’t giving you enough Slacker credibility, pop it on and hunker down with this Special Anniversary Lebowski DVD in bowling ball casing.
 Eating
Too moules for school: For a little while now, those in the know about Zurich’s eateries have been trying to keep Les Halles under wraps. It’s considered to one of the best venues for seafood lovers – especially those who love their mussels. September is the season for this shellfish and three different moules dishes on the menu, you’ll have beat the rush to get a table. Les Halles

Dear friends
This month is full of bank holidays so we have yet another long weekend to look forward to. However, the weather forecast doesn’t sound good, so I’ve decided that I’ll go looking for sunshine and return with bags full of it in June.  I’ve included a preview for each week that I’m gone in this week‘s newsletter, so you shouldn’t miss me too much.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Legendary

What is it that turns a moment, into a great story, into a legend that is as familiar to those that weren’t there as those that were? This trail to immortality is explored in Rumours and Legends, a new experimental play showing at Gessenerallee until Wednesday. Three performance artists from the UK, Spain and Austria collaborate using an elaborate game as a starting point to hunt for new legends and the creation of meaning out of the everyday. Spoken in English.
Thursday until Wednesday 22nd May, 8 pm, Gessenerallee

This Friday they are celebrating their 10th anniversary at Friedas Büxe with the finest line-up including Mike Huckaby, Pixelpunks, Eli Verveine and Pistol Pete. I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.
Friday 11 pm, Friedas Büxe

Rebel, rebel

If the thought of running away to join a freewheeling, revolutionary Russian gypsy gang has a certain romantic appeal but you’ve just realised you haven’t asked anyone to take care of your indoor plants, then fear not, Bajanski Bal will satisfy the rebel in you with their wild polkas, revolutionary hymns and Russian folk songs at Stall 6 on Saturday night. Be wild! Be free! Be home by the morning to water the plants!
Saturday 10 pm, Stall 6

New, new wave

Just to be awkward, French Films are actually a Finnish band that plays indie rock as if they were in England in 1982. If you think you’ve had enough of skinny boys in even skinnier jeans, maybe these guys can change your mind. They’ve got the punky attitude but also the melodies to sweeten the taste; imagine if Joy Division had found a jaunty hat and learned to smile. They play at Mascotte on Tuesday.
Tuesday 7 pm, Mascotte

Preview I: Design circles

The Langstrasse area, in Kreis 4 and 5, is known for both its multicultural scene and its design community. As such, it plays host every year to Kreislauf 4 + 5, when about 80 stores and studios open their doors to show their works and give the public an opportunity to speak with the designers. This year the Kreislauf already begins on Friday. Under the theme: „now or never“ each venue offers a chosen object at a reduced price between 5-9 pm. If you're not around at the weekend from 24th to 26th of May, it's still worth checking out the event's website, one of the best and most complete lists of Zurich's many ateliers and designers, ranging from fashion and interior to jewellery and art - and available in English.
Kreislauf 4+5, 24-26 May: Friday 5–9 pm / Saturday 11 am–6 pm /Sunday 11 am–6 pm

Preview II: Here comes the sun?

Festival fever is starting to heat up even if summer is being extremely coy with us, and whilst I can’t promise the sunshine the last weekend of May is a good chance to ease yourself into a summer vibe with the Stolze Openair. It’s Zurich’s largest, free music festival and is well within the city limits. The line-up includes an eclectic mix of local and international bands with a couple of UK bands, Belleruche and We Have Band, closing out each of the two nights.
Friday 31st May & Saturday 1st June, Stolzewiese, 8033

Eating: Club kitchen
The place where you're dancing at the weekend in Hive, is the home of Geroldchuchi during the week. They offer homemade pasta in various variations and of course you can also order the legendary Geroldburger from their take-way downstairs. On Wednesday and Thursday, the restaurant is also opened in the evening and I just love the atmosphere with the club lighting. I’m sure you’re familiar with it from one or the other night out.
Geroldchuchi, Geroldstrasse 5, 8005

Good to know

Last week, the open air swimming areas along the river opened officially. It’s still too cold to swim (for me at least) but you can visit the bars wearing a jacket and get at least a little bit of summer spirit: Every Tuesday Flussbar is open at Untere Letten. The train wagon at Obere Letten serves fresh Ciabata daily, Panama Bar at Obere Letten is  a good spot for an after work beer and if it’s not raining I like the charm of Rimini. When I return in June – I’m sure we’re just a few days away from jumping into the water too.

Not just for men

Casual-Chic.ch, the only Swiss online-shop for men only, and the young Italian shoe label Scarosso get together in a pop-up store. Just next to the main station they sell clothes and shoes for the summer yet to come until 24th of May.  And for the ladies Scarosso also brings its female line along.
Pop-up store until 24th May, Waisenhausstrasse 5, 8001

Genre map

There are probably as many music styles as there are musicians. And when reading expressions such as "Pinoy Alternative", "Vaporwave" or "Chiptune", I only have the hint of an idea what they’re talking about. Thanks to the Genremap, it’s now easier to find your way through the jungle of musical terms and the examples are worth listening to too.
