Dear friends

I’ll be away next week in the midst of an extended 1st August National Day extravaganza, which unfortunately means you won’t be receiving my newsletter, but dry your tears and be assured that I’ll be back and full of Zurich zeal the following week. I wish you all a happy National Day.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Summer city

Each year the city fathers like to support Zurich’s fantastic music scene by putting on Stadtsommer. From Thursday until the 4th August, seven bands and musicians from around Zurich get to perform a concert in the open air at a location of their choice within the city. This year's highlights include the electro-glitching Bit-Tuner (under Kornhausbrücke), a Spezialmaterial Label Night (Summer Stage, Rote Fabrik) and Grand Pianoramix(Bäckeranlage) as well as the one and only (if you were living in Switzerland in the 90s) Baby Jail (in front of Helsinki Club)
Thursday to 4th August, See website for locations and times

Cool breeze

Anna Kaenzig is a Zurich born singer/songwriter that I discovered a little while ago, as her light-as-air vocals floated into my head and decided to stay. Her music combines pop, jazz and folk into songs that bounce along with a carefree swagger and feel like a cool summer breeze. She’ll be playing at La Catrina tonight which, given the summer heat we’re expecting, may need all the summer breezes it can get.
Thursday 10 pm, La Catrina

Drumpoets

Hidden away down a not too promising side entrance is the Kaufleuten terrace, also known as The Hof; a bubble of peace amid the city bustle. This Friday night it is being taken over by the Love Cult, unfortunately not a dodgy sect but an intimate evening of the finest sounds curated by leader of Zurich’s Drumpoet Community, Alex Dallas. He’ll have a few dj’s on hand to help him weave the musical magic, and if that wasn’t enough for you, you can really get that ‘summer-in-the-city’ feel as cold drinks and grilled food accompany the beats.
Friday 6 pm, Kaufleuten Hof

Viva Cabaret

Hola, mi amigos. If you’re stuck in the city this weekend but have dreams of Sangria, sunburn and partying on the Costa Del Sol, Cabaret may have just saved you an air ticket. This Saturday, Cabaret becomes Hacienda, La Discoteca. The club will have a complete Spanish refit, from the hacienda style decoration to music that is made to forget home. The only thing missing will be a moustached waiter hoping to learn more about your strange Swiss ways and which hotel you stay in.
Saturday 11 pm, Cabaret

Fork and Bottle

"Dear friends of ‘danceable’ green areas", starts the email from the collective Zigifabrik. They organise an electronic open air this Tuesday to dance into the Swiss national day – I love it when we get a day off in the middle of the week – and August, where summer hopefully awaits us. It only takes place if it’s dry so check their page before heading out to Allmendstrasse 20. Tip: Bringing along food or drinks is not allowed as already the entry is already for free.
Tuesday 7.30 pm – 4 am, Allmendstrasse 20

Bank holiday

To celebrate 1 August in style, start your lazy Wednesday with a Swiss Brunch at Dini Mueter accompanied by folkloric music from the band with the fantastic name Echo vom Chalberschwanz (echo from the calf’s tail). Afterward I suggest hitting Fritschiwiese to digest this Swiss overdose with cosmopolitan sounds from all around the world, art and “sport” projects as well as food from Venezuela. And once it gets dark it’s time to light the fireworks. Happy 1. August!
Wednesday, 10 am to 2 pm, Dini Mueter
Wednesday, 2 pm, Fritschiwiese

Good to know: London to Zurich

From Friday until 12 August the Olympic Games are taking place in London. For all of you, who won’t go to London I bring a small piece of the Olympics to Zurich (next to watching the games on TV). Exhibition: 12 designers (6 from Zurich and 6 from London) created a poster for the Olympic Games under the theme “we paint the town red”. The results you see at the exhibition at Museum für Gestaltung until 26 August, or rather their smaller exhibition area Vestibül. Radio: The International Radio Festival that visits Zurich every September organized a special pop up edition for the Games until 12 August. London djs will show their best, combined with some Swiss talents. Branding: If you ever wondered how you would brand the Olympics if they took place in Zurich instead of London (well, who hasn’t thought about that), then look at George Strouzas designed answer symbolizing unity and neutrality. May peace be with you and all the athletes!

Eating – A bite of English

If none of the above events satisfied your yearning for some British culture. Afternoon Tea: Eden bar (at the Eden au lac hotel, Utoquai 43, 8008 Zurich) serves daily a traditional Afternoon Tea from 1-5 pm, with fifteen different teas to choose from and an impressive three-tier tray piled with finger sandwiches, mini crepes, short bread and scones. Costs: 29 francs / 39 francs with Prosecco. Pubs (a small selection): Big Ben Pub (Niederdorfstrasse 52, 8001) has always a game on, so I’m pretty sure they’ll be screening the Olympics too. It attracts a mixed crowed and you find its younger version in Kreis 5 (Big Ben Pub West Side; Hardstrasse 234). Nelson Pub (Beatengasse 1, 8001) provides a true Anglophile atmosphere. As they showed all football games during Euro 2012, I’m convinced they switch on the TV if you ask nicely. Oliver Twist (Rindermarkt 6, 8001) will screen the Olympics all day in a leathery but cosy atmosphere.

Dear friends
This month is full of bank holidays so we have yet another long weekend to look forward to. However, the weather forecast doesn’t sound good, so I’ve decided that I’ll go looking for sunshine and return with bags full of it in June.  I’ve included a preview for each week that I’m gone in this week‘s newsletter, so you shouldn’t miss me too much.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Legendary

What is it that turns a moment, into a great story, into a legend that is as familiar to those that weren’t there as those that were? This trail to immortality is explored in Rumours and Legends, a new experimental play showing at Gessenerallee until Wednesday. Three performance artists from the UK, Spain and Austria collaborate using an elaborate game as a starting point to hunt for new legends and the creation of meaning out of the everyday. Spoken in English.
Thursday until Wednesday 22nd May, 8 pm, Gessenerallee

Audio anniversary

If you’re in Zurich and have a passion for electronic music then Audioasyl.net should be your music supplier of choice. Although based in town, they broadcast globally with daily live shows over the web and also showcase the best of the Swiss electro scene throughout clubland. This Friday they are celebrating their 10th anniversary at Friedas Büxe with the finest line-up including Mike Huckaby, Pixelpunks, Eli Verveine and Pistol Pete. I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.
Friday 11 pm, Friedas Büxe

Rebel, rebel

If the thought of running away to join a freewheeling, revolutionary Russian gypsy gang has a certain romantic appeal but you’ve just realised you haven’t asked anyone to take care of your indoor plants, then fear not, Bajanski Bal will satisfy the rebel in you with their wild polkas, revolutionary hymns and Russian folk songs at Stall 6 on Saturday night. Be wild! Be free! Be home by the morning to water the plants!
Saturday 10 pm, Stall 6

New, new wave

Just to be awkward, French Films are actually a Finnish band that plays indie rock as if they were in England in 1982. If you think you’ve had enough of skinny boys in even skinnier jeans, maybe these guys can change your mind. They’ve got the punky attitude but also the melodies to sweeten the taste; imagine if Joy Division had found a jaunty hat and learned to smile. They play at Mascotte on Tuesday.
Tuesday 7 pm, Mascotte

Preview I: Design circles

The Langstrasse area, in Kreis 4 and 5, is known for both its multicultural scene and its design community. As such, it plays host every year to Kreislauf 4 + 5, when about 80 stores and studios open their doors to show their works and give the public an opportunity to speak with the designers. This year the Kreislauf already begins on Friday. Under the theme: „now or never“ each venue offers a chosen object at a reduced price between 5-9 pm. If you're not around at the weekend from 24th to 26th of May, it's still worth checking out the event's website, one of the best and most complete lists of Zurich's many ateliers and designers, ranging from fashion and interior to jewellery and art - and available in English.
Kreislauf 4+5, 24-26 May: Friday 5–9 pm / Saturday 11 am–6 pm /Sunday 11 am–6 pm

Preview II: Here comes the sun?

Festival fever is starting to heat up even if summer is being extremely coy with us, and whilst I can’t promise the sunshine the last weekend of May is a good chance to ease yourself into a summer vibe with the Stolze Openair. It’s Zurich’s largest, free music festival and is well within the city limits. The line-up includes an eclectic mix of local and international bands with a couple of UK bands, Belleruche and We Have Band, closing out each of the two nights.
Friday 31st May & Saturday 1st June, Stolzewiese, 8033

Eating: Club kitchen
The place where you're dancing at the weekend in Hive, is the home of Geroldchuchi during the week. They offer homemade pasta in various variations and of course you can also order the legendary Geroldburger from their take-way downstairs. On Wednesday and Thursday, the restaurant is also opened in the evening and I just love the atmosphere with the club lighting. I’m sure you’re familiar with it from one or the other night out.
Geroldchuchi, Geroldstrasse 5, 8005

Good to know

Last week, the open air swimming areas along the river opened officially. It’s still too cold to swim (for me at least) but you can visit the bars wearing a jacket and get at least a little bit of summer spirit: Every Tuesday Flussbar is open at Untere Letten. The train wagon at Obere Letten serves fresh Ciabata daily, Panama Bar at Obere Letten is  a good spot for an after work beer and if it’s not raining I like the charm of Rimini. When I return in June – I’m sure we’re just a few days away from jumping into the water too.

Not just for men

Casual-Chic.ch, the only Swiss online-shop for men only, and the young Italian shoe label Scarosso get together in a pop-up store. Just next to the main station they sell clothes and shoes for the summer yet to come until 24th of May.  And for the ladies Scarosso also brings its female line along.
Pop-up store until 24th May, Waisenhausstrasse 5, 8001

Genre map

There are probably as many music styles as there are musicians. And when reading expressions such as "Pinoy Alternative", "Vaporwave" or "Chiptune", I only have the hint of an idea what they’re talking about. Thanks to the Genremap, it’s now easier to find your way through the jungle of musical terms and the examples are worth listening to too.
