Run rabbit run

Brooklyn has been the place from which a lot of bands have emerged over the last decade or so, all with an interesting take on indie-pop and now, sticking their little heads out of this same musical hole, are White Rabbits. Their music is built on a solid chassis of bass, (two!) drummers and guitar but the bodywork is pimped using synths and electronic slashes that keep things ever so slightly funky. I’d suggest following these White Rabbits down the rabbit hole and see where you end up. They play at Rote Fabrik tonight.
Thursday 8.30 pm, Rote Fabrik

This little piggy

In the early 70’s, criminally underrated artist Gordon Matta-Clark did something I’ve always felt a primal urge to do – roasted a whole pig on a spit in the middle of town. He cooked, filmed and served it under the Brooklyn Bridge and called the piece ‘Pig Roast’. This weekend Station21, a gallery specifically for young artists, have invited 2 artists from Bern to show at the gallery. Julius von Bismarck will be showing his new exhibition titled Punishments, which on Friday will also include a re-enactment of ‘Pig Roast’. Not only will you see the art but you can taste and munch on it too. On Saturday, Andreas Egli will examine and discuss the themes and issues raised by Julius’ work.
Friday 2 pm & Saturday 11 am, Station21, Stationstrasse 21, 8003

Vintage sunshine

Weekends are made for mooching around markets and this weekend, with the summer sun making a much-promised appearance, is no exception. The Vintage Market at Rosengarten will have a great selection of vintage clothing and accessories for you to rummage through, and if finding a beautiful bargain, sunshine and being Saturday doesn’t make you whelp with puppy-like glee they will also be serving cupcakes as well.
Saturday 3 pm to 10 pm, Rosengarten, Kalkbreitestrasse 2, 8003

Planet pop

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is a perfect name for this Danish band. Their music refuses to fit into any confined space or genre but rather travels to all reaches of the musical universe, all the while powered by a little space ship called pop. With so much going on in the music, it’s a miracle that lead singer Mette Lindberg can still sound so distinctive but with a voice you’ll either love or learn to, she clearly does. If you’re looking for something sticky and sweet on Monday night, they’re playing at Abart

Workers of the world, relax

This Tuesday is the 1st May, which also being known as International Workers Day means, for most of us, we get to internationally stop working for a day. Apart from the rioting there isn’t much going on during the day in town. If you want to stay off the streets and enjoy an old fashioned UK themed Bank Holiday, the Big Ben Pub has a darts tournament going on but I’ve heard a rumour that the place to be in the afternoon is at Bäckeranlage. If you like to party and enjoy a surprise musical guest or two, get yourself down there.

Sweet Zurich

Berfe became a pastry chef at the French Culinary Institute in New York. Last fall she moved to Zurich and now creates customized cakes for any occasion under the name Baked by B. The pastries on the website look so I good, I want to taste them all. If you do too, don't forget that you need to order them in advance. But I assure you; it’s worth the wait.

Good to know

This Friday, South Africa celebrates its Freedom Day, the date of the first democratic elections (1994) in the country. There doesn't appear to be any offical celebrations going on in town. But if you'd like to celebrate the democratic spirit, book a table at Mama Africa, the South African restaurant in Zurich West or get a bottle of great South African wine for a party at home.

No Layout

I love independent magazines, as they don't have to answer to a large overhead and therefore try to take new paths. The text and designs reflect the passion and dedication of the founders. The website No Layout is a digital library for independent publishers, focusing on art books and fashion magazines. Great to browse through on a rainy afternoon.

Lists of note

I very rarely write lists; this may be one of the reasons why my cupboard is always bare and the things I have ‘to-do’ always need to ‘get-done’, but others are not so list shy. Listsofnote is a website dedicated to the lists of famous people. If you ever wondered what would be on Johnny Cash’s To-Do list (No.2 Kiss June, No.3 Don’t kiss anyone else) or Rudyard Kipling’s Rules for Life in London, add this site to your new ‘time-wasting’ list.

Christmas time is here again and just as Santa readies his reindeers, dons his red suit and packs his sack full of toys, I too will be avoiding real work over the next two weeks. The next newsletter you'll receive from me will be in 2015 but I've included some New Year’s parties in this one for those that will miss me.
Give my love to the city and a happy New Year to everyone, Ron

Add to favourit  Open Air: Christmas flames

Christmas always brings out the romantic Ronster in me. After all, isn’t love the greatest gift of all? (or it would be, if it weren’t for this excellent blue Snuggie. Hint, hint Santa). Anyway, if you wander down to Stadthausquai, near Rathausbrücke, this evening you can take part in the Zürich Christmas tradition of Lichterschwimmen, where hundreds of people will be releasing little boats filled with candles into the Limmat. Hot punch and sweet treats will also be on hand as you gaze dreamily into the flickering river.
Thursday  5 pm – 7 pm, Stadthausquai, near Rathausbrücke

Add to favourit  Stage: Vaudeville vandals

The Tiger Lilies have the air of a vaudeville act that could have been performing in an old pub, on a dark and foggy London street, just as Jack the Ripper was having his dastardly way in the shadows. They mix music hall and vaudeville with a punk attitude and ghoulish humour that will make you laugh, while at the same time wondering if you should be laughing at all. Their new show, The Very Worst of The Tiger Lilies, is at Theater Rigiblick on Friday.
Friday 8 pm, Theater Rigiblick

Add to favourit  Cinema: Angel’s wings

If, despite the tinsel, the glittering lights and queuing up to buy presents, you still haven’t been fully embraced by the Christmas spirit, might Dr Ron recommend a shot of his finest, Grade A, pure-cut never-fails remedy. On Saturday and Sunday, Film Podium will be showing Frank Capra’s Christmas classic It’s A Wonderful Life. If you’ve never seen the film before then prepare to leave the cinema with your heart all aglow and a glisten in your eye. If you have seen it, then go renew your faith in your fellow man and repeat after me, “Attaboy, Clarence!”
Saturday 8.45 pm, Sunday 2.30 pm, Film Podium

Add to favourit  Concert: Winter legends

When the legends of El Dorado were first whispered, about that mysteries and lost city of gold in the Andes mountains, could they ever have thought that a bar in Zurich, coincidentally named Eldorado, would also contain a plethora of shiny riches and treasures, but would be infinitely more locatable. Probably not. Either way, the nearly unlimited number of beers (101, actually) they offer would be temptation enough for the meekest of explorers but this Sunday they are also hosting the Winter Unplugged Music Festival, where a nearly unlimited number of performers (5, actually) will be showcasing their acoustic skills from the haunting sounds of Me.Man.Machine to the poetic heartbreak of Faber.
Sunday 7 pm, Eldorado

Add to favourit  Preview 1: Double-bill

Christmas always brings out the big softy in me, although that may also be the Glühwein working it's wily magic, so I was happy to see that Xenix are showing an open-air (yes, outside) double-bill on Christmas Eve (Wednesday). The first is the Buster Keaton classic silent comedy, The General, where our hero tries to get back the two loves of his life: his bride and his locomotive (not necessarily in that order). Blankets will be available but bring your own to guarantee one. The second movie is screened indoors: In «Barbarella» Jane Fond's sex-bomb tries to save the world, to do this she has to face some unique adventures first. First film starts at 6.30 pm, second at 9 pm.
Merry Christmas!

Add to favourit  Drinking: For beer lovers

The mission of The International is simple: to offer the widest range of European and Swiss craft beers in Zurich. The bar is new, the beers are great and host Mike Jones as well as his staff are always happy to tell you more about the brew in front of you. Or recommend one to your liking. So try it out. Mike will add more labels constantly and for the future, he also plans to arrange degustation evenings and brewery trips.
The International, Luisenstrasse 7, 8005. Opening hours: Tuesday & Wednesday 12 pm to 11 pm, Thursday to Sunday 12 pm to 12 am

Gian has a dream. At present he is in Vietnam, where he helps kids in foster home. By the end of the year, he will return home, but before he leaves he would like to give as many children as possible a Christmas present. For this he collects money on the crowdfunding-platform 100-days.net. He has seven days left to raise the rest of the money, so give him – and the kids in Ho Chi Minh City – a boost.
