French fancy

When it comes to the alchemy of sexual charm, being French and female and a singer is a potent combination. My fevered teenage mind was forever replaying Vanessa Paradis’ sultry pout. Now direct from Paris is Lou Lesage, a 20-year-old singer who has taken the Parisian scene by storm with her rock-influenced songs. She plays live tonight at Restaurant Viadukt, and I’m suddenly in the mood for a garlic baguette.

The International Comedy Club usually likes to bring us comedy double bills from the UK and US but this week they’ve gone a little exotic. Jarred Christmas (that is his real name apparently) comes to us from New Zealand. He may look like Elvis’ younger, nerdier brother but the sheer force of his personality delivers the comedy at a non-stop pace. Also on the bill is Andrew Bird, from a green corner of the UK called Northamptonshire, whose comedy comes across with charm and is filled with reminiscences of childhood.

Find love, hear music

Love and music. Music and love. Are there two finer things in the whole wide world? And this weekend, your Uncle Ron may be able to help you find both at Stall 6. On Saturday, they hold their first ever speed dating evening. Love may be free but you’ll pay chf 20 to register. The after party is helmed by djs Coconut and Alain Ford. As you’ll be gazing into the eyes of your new love, making walking very difficult, why not hang around Stall 6 until Sunday afternoon when the Lauter Festival takes place. Lauter translates as louder in English, so you can imagine this festival will certainly rock. The line up is large and international including Ewert and The Two Dragons from Estonia, Steaming Satellites from Vienna, Labrador City from Bern and Zigitros from Zurich. If music be the food of love, you had better make your newfound loving loud.
Saturday 8:30 pm, Stall 6

Waiting for the revolution

Capitalism made us rich and healthy, but not happy. The resentment is taken out on the street; religion brings more conflicts than peace on earth. The speech series Waiting for the revolution analyses and looks for answers. How can we change society? Politics? Economy? As the third speaker in this series, charming Tom Hodgkinson talks (in English) about freedom, laziness and gardening. You can listen to the British author’s plea for afternoon naps and social alcohol consumption instead of shopping and protestant work ethics this Sunday at Schauspielhaus Pfauen. If you’re not convinced that this could be more entertaining than the usual Sunday evening film, the German newspaper Die Zeit called him “the Jamie Oliver of anti-capitalism”. Just as humorous but without the olive oil.

Good to know

It’s that time of the year again, where a part of Zurich’s male population plays Robin Hood – or at least men in tights. And where we get half a day off! The tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. The festivities start with the children's parade on Sunday but the highlight is on Monday when the guilds march through the centre. When the church bells start to ring at 6 pm (which is why it’s called Sechseläuten) it's time to burn the Böögg, a snowman effigy stuffed with wadding and firecrackers. The sooner its head explodes, the better the summer weather forecast. Afterwards you can grill a sausage on the still-hot coals of the Böögg’s pyre. The area by Bellevue will be very crowded but there are loads of stalls to get a bite to eat or a drink. Or join the infamous party at Mascotte.
Monday from 3 pm, city centre

Short and swede

Like short stories, short films can often be overlooked simply because of their length but I’ve always thought the skill needed to stuff big stories into small boxes a special kind of magic. In collaboration with the Swedish Embassy, Riff Raff are showing an evening of modern Swedish Short Films. Ten are being shown in total over the evening’s two and a half hours and each seems to show a different and engaging way of looking at the world. The events curators will also give an introduction to the evening and all films will have English subtitles.
Sunday 7:45 pm, Riff Raff

On air

World Radio Switzerland (WRS) is Switzerland’s only national English-radio station, part of Swiss Broadcasting Corporation. Now, WRS has until the end of June 2012 to prove that it provides a valuable public service, otherwise it will be closed or sold. If you’d like to keep the station on air, sign their petition and even better, tune in regularly to their programs covering Swiss news, politics, culture, arts, sport and business.

Zurich's burning

I always get a small thrill from watching a movie with Zurich featured somewhere in it. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Bourne Identity are a couple of examples but what I would really like is to see my own street, as well as the Ron HQ, having a staring role in one of those blockbuster disaster movies. Well, with the site 'chaos in your town' I can stop stalking Spielberg and make my own movie dreams come true. Unleash chaos

Dear friends
This month is full of bank holidays so we have yet another long weekend to look forward to. However, the weather forecast doesn’t sound good, so I’ve decided that I’ll go looking for sunshine and return with bags full of it in June.  I’ve included a preview for each week that I’m gone in this week‘s newsletter, so you shouldn’t miss me too much.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Legendary

What is it that turns a moment, into a great story, into a legend that is as familiar to those that weren’t there as those that were? This trail to immortality is explored in Rumours and Legends, a new experimental play showing at Gessenerallee until Wednesday. Three performance artists from the UK, Spain and Austria collaborate using an elaborate game as a starting point to hunt for new legends and the creation of meaning out of the everyday. Spoken in English.
Thursday until Wednesday 22nd May, 8 pm, Gessenerallee

Audio anniversary

If you’re in Zurich and have a passion for electronic music then Audioasyl.net should be your music supplier of choice. Although based in town, they broadcast globally with daily live shows over the web and also showcase the best of the Swiss electro scene throughout clubland. This Friday they are celebrating their 10th anniversary at Friedas Büxe with the finest line-up including Mike Huckaby, Pixelpunks, Eli Verveine and Pistol Pete. I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.
Friday 11 pm, Friedas Büxe

Rebel, rebel

If the thought of running away to join a freewheeling, revolutionary Russian gypsy gang has a certain romantic appeal but you’ve just realised you haven’t asked anyone to take care of your indoor plants, then fear not, Bajanski Bal will satisfy the rebel in you with their wild polkas, revolutionary hymns and Russian folk songs at Stall 6 on Saturday night. Be wild! Be free! Be home by the morning to water the plants!
Saturday 10 pm, Stall 6

New, new wave

Just to be awkward, French Films are actually a Finnish band that plays indie rock as if they were in England in 1982. If you think you’ve had enough of skinny boys in even skinnier jeans, maybe these guys can change your mind. They’ve got the punky attitude but also the melodies to sweeten the taste; imagine if Joy Division had found a jaunty hat and learned to smile. They play at Mascotte on Tuesday.
Tuesday 7 pm, Mascotte

Preview I: Design circles

The Langstrasse area, in Kreis 4 and 5, is known for both its multicultural scene and its design community. As such, it plays host every year to Kreislauf 4 + 5, when about 80 stores and studios open their doors to show their works and give the public an opportunity to speak with the designers. This year the Kreislauf already begins on Friday. Under the theme: „now or never“ each venue offers a chosen object at a reduced price between 5-9 pm. If you're not around at the weekend from 24th to 26th of May, it's still worth checking out the event's website, one of the best and most complete lists of Zurich's many ateliers and designers, ranging from fashion and interior to jewellery and art - and available in English.
Kreislauf 4+5, 24-26 May: Friday 5–9 pm / Saturday 11 am–6 pm /Sunday 11 am–6 pm

Preview II: Here comes the sun?

Festival fever is starting to heat up even if summer is being extremely coy with us, and whilst I can’t promise the sunshine the last weekend of May is a good chance to ease yourself into a summer vibe with the Stolze Openair. It’s Zurich’s largest, free music festival and is well within the city limits. The line-up includes an eclectic mix of local and international bands with a couple of UK bands, Belleruche and We Have Band, closing out each of the two nights.
Friday 31st May & Saturday 1st June, Stolzewiese, 8033

Eating: Club kitchen
The place where you're dancing at the weekend in Hive, is the home of Geroldchuchi during the week. They offer homemade pasta in various variations and of course you can also order the legendary Geroldburger from their take-way downstairs. On Wednesday and Thursday, the restaurant is also opened in the evening and I just love the atmosphere with the club lighting. I’m sure you’re familiar with it from one or the other night out.
Geroldchuchi, Geroldstrasse 5, 8005

Good to know

Last week, the open air swimming areas along the river opened officially. It’s still too cold to swim (for me at least) but you can visit the bars wearing a jacket and get at least a little bit of summer spirit: Every Tuesday Flussbar is open at Untere Letten. The train wagon at Obere Letten serves fresh Ciabata daily, Panama Bar at Obere Letten is  a good spot for an after work beer and if it’s not raining I like the charm of Rimini. When I return in June – I’m sure we’re just a few days away from jumping into the water too.

Not just for men

Casual-Chic.ch, the only Swiss online-shop for men only, and the young Italian shoe label Scarosso get together in a pop-up store. Just next to the main station they sell clothes and shoes for the summer yet to come until 24th of May.  And for the ladies Scarosso also brings its female line along.
Pop-up store until 24th May, Waisenhausstrasse 5, 8001

Genre map

There are probably as many music styles as there are musicians. And when reading expressions such as "Pinoy Alternative", "Vaporwave" or "Chiptune", I only have the hint of an idea what they’re talking about. Thanks to the Genremap, it’s now easier to find your way through the jungle of musical terms and the examples are worth listening to too.
