When it comes to the alchemy of sexual charm, being French and female and a singer is a potent combination. My fevered teenage mind was forever replaying Vanessa Paradis’ sultry pout. Now direct from Paris is Lou Lesage, a 20-year-old singer who has taken the Parisian scene by storm with her rock-influenced songs. She plays live tonight at Restaurant Viadukt, and I’m suddenly in the mood for a garlic baguette. Thursday 9 pm, Restaurant Viadukt

The International Comedy Club usually likes to bring us comedy double bills from the UK and US but this week they’ve gone a little exotic. Jarred Christmas (that is his real name apparently) comes to us from New Zealand. He may look like Elvis’ younger, nerdier brother but the sheer force of his personality delivers the comedy at a non-stop pace. Also on the bill is Andrew Bird, from a green corner of the UK called Northamptonshire, whose comedy comes across with charm and is filled with reminiscences of childhood. Friday 8 pm, Mascotte
Find love, hear music
Love and music. Music and love. Are there two finer things in the whole wide world? And this weekend, your Uncle Ron may be able to help you find both at Stall 6. On Saturday, they hold their first ever speed dating evening. Love may be free but you’ll pay chf 20 to register. The after party is helmed by djs Coconut and Alain Ford. As you’ll be gazing into the eyes of your new love, making walking very difficult, why not hang around Stall 6 until Sunday afternoon when the Lauter Festival takes place. Lauter translates as louder in English, so you can imagine this festival will certainly rock. The line up is large and international including Ewert and The Two Dragons from Estonia, Steaming Satellites from Vienna, Labrador City from Bern and Zigitros from Zurich. If music be the food of love, you had better make your newfound loving loud. Saturday 8:30 pm, Stall 6 Sunday 4 pm, Stall 6

Waiting for the revolution
Capitalism made us rich and healthy, but not happy. The resentment is taken out on the street; religion brings more conflicts than peace on earth. The speech series Waiting for the revolution analyses and looks for answers. How can we change society? Politics? Economy? As the third speaker in this series, charming Tom Hodgkinson talks (in English) about freedom, laziness and gardening. You can listen to the British author’s plea for afternoon naps and social alcohol consumption instead of shopping and protestant work ethics this Sunday at Schauspielhaus Pfauen. If you’re not convinced that this could be more entertaining than the usual Sunday evening film, the German newspaper Die Zeit called him “the Jamie Oliver of anti-capitalism”. Just as humorous but without the olive oil. Sunday 8 pm, Pfauen
Good to know
It’s that time of the year again, where a part of Zurich’s male population plays Robin Hood – or at least men in tights. And where we get half a day off! The tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. The festivities start with the children's parade on Sunday but the highlight is on Monday when the guilds march through the centre. When the church bells start to ring at 6 pm (which is why it’s called Sechseläuten) it's time to burn the Böögg, a snowman effigy stuffed with wadding and firecrackers. The sooner its head explodes, the better the summer weather forecast. Afterwards you can grill a sausage on the still-hot coals of the Böögg’s pyre. The area by Bellevue will be very crowded but there are loads of stalls to get a bite to eat or a drink. Or join the infamous party at Mascotte. Monday from 3 pm, city centre

Like short stories, short films can often be overlooked simply because of their length but I’ve always thought the skill needed to stuff big stories into small boxes a special kind of magic. In collaboration with the Swedish Embassy, Riff Raff are showing an evening of modern Swedish Short Films. Ten are being shown in total over the evening’s two and a half hours and each seems to show a different and engaging way of looking at the world. The events curators will also give an introduction to the evening and all films will have English subtitles. Sunday 7:45 pm, Riff Raff
World Radio Switzerland (WRS) is Switzerland’s only national English-radio station, part of Swiss Broadcasting Corporation. Now, WRS has until the end of June 2012 to prove that it provides a valuable public service, otherwise it will be closed or sold. If you’d like to keep the station on air, sign their petition and even better, tune in regularly to their programs covering Swiss news, politics, culture, arts, sport and business.
I always get a small thrill from watching a movie with Zurich featured somewhere in it. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Bourne Identity are a couple of examples but what I would really like is to see my own street, as well as the Ron HQ, having a staring role in one of those blockbuster disaster movies. Well, with the site 'chaos in your town' I can stop stalking Spielberg and make my own movie dreams come true. Unleash chaos

Ocean Film Tour drops anchor at Volkshaus Zurich. For two hours you’ll be transformed into a world, where people make their dreams come true, such as youngster Laura Dekker who sails around the world alone. Or Ray, who still dives at the age of 75. The movie is a compilation of eight films and the passion of the protagonists is intoxicating. It’s the only show in Switzerland this year. You can also buy the dvd, but I suggest, don’t miss it.
Thursday 8 pm, Volkshaus
Invitation to Europe’s largest waterfall
The Rhine Falls is one of the top sights among Switzerland’s magnificent natural wonders. From a height of 23 metres, the powerful mass of water plunges down the imposing rocks into the depths below. A visit is worth in every season and offers a unique experience for everyone.
Redeemable at boat trips, Adventure Park, Shops and Restaurants at the Rhine Falls.
According to popular urban myth, if you listen to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon at the same time as watching The Wizard of Oz, the two synch up perfectly and you can enjoy having your mind blown as Dorothy realises she's not in Kansas anymore.
Theater Rigiblick have taken this idea and made a truly synchronised event. They have adapted the music of Dark Side of the Moon to piano and string quartet and are merging it with a reading of a great Ray Bradbury short story, Kaleidoscope. This is one of the greatest science fiction authors and one of the greatest albums of the 20th century in perfect, blissed-out harmony with you along for the space ride. Friday 8 pm, Theater Rigiblick
Party: Second hand party
Arche Brockenhaus has more than just second-hand gear loitering in its warehouse this Saturday. Firstly, they have the
Second Life Flea Market, which exists for the motto - one person’s junk, is another person’s treasure. If you get a little restless of bargain hunting you could always join the ping-pong competition they’re holding or chill out at the bar. Later in the evening, and after their long winter sleep, the party label
Do What Ya Like! will be setting free their djs to keep the after-party jumping. Saturday 5 pm, Flea Market & Ping-Pong, 10 pm, After-Party, Arche Brockenhaus
Concert: Duck dynasty
Ugly Duckling is a hip-hop group that come from Long Beach, California and they let that mellow West Coast sunshine ooze into their music. Layering old school samples, scratches and even samba beats, under a lyrical dexterity that echoes the Beastie Boys at their intelligent and hilarious best, these three guys are all about the pranksta, rather than the gangsta, rap. They’re playing live at
Stall 6 on Sunday and I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me. Sunday 8 pm, Stall 6
Concert: Retro metro
Metronomy are a slightly quirky four piece from Brighton, England who mix their electro-pop sound with real charm and danceable vibes. Their last album, The English Riviera, was full of melancholy dance tunes that seemed to feel like the sunrise of an early morning walk home after the party has ended. They’ve just released their newest album, Love Letters, which adds classic 60’s song writing to the electro mix and they’ll be playing at
Kaufleuten on Monday. Monday 8 pm, Kaufleuten
Concert: Reel music
In a kind of technological time loop, the
Open Reel Ensemble from Japan, take old analogue reel-to-reel tape machines and use them, along with the latest digital technology, to mix and create complex and pulsating soundscapes both from pre-recorded sound but also live noises captured from the crowd or room. To listen to these five guys standing in front of their machines, mixing and looping the magnetic tape as one entity, is to hear both the future and past of music in perfect symmetry. They play at
Kunstraum Walcheturm on Wednesday. Wednesday 8 pm, Kunstraum Walcheturm
In the menu, a finch (German: der Fink) is sitting either on a corkscrew (representing drinks) or on a sausage (representing food). So I played a bit of «find the finch» while waiting for my food. Once it arrived I didn’t need any other distraction. The
Restaurant zum Fink opened its doors a short while back at Josefstrasse and comes with a small but tasty selection of dishes and friendly staff. What more do you need? Restaurant zum Fink, Josefstrasse 146, 8005. Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 9 am to 10 pm. Friday & Saturday 9 am to midnight and Sunday 9 am to 5 pm
Shopping tip: Sneaky sneakers
Sneakerness resides at Maag Halle. A heaven for everyone who likes their sneakers. More or less every brand you can think of will be there, showing off with their trendiest and rarest collections and maybe convincing you to get a pair. Or two. The
opening party takes place on Friday (entry: 30 francs), Saturday and Sunday (one day: 10 francs, two days: 15 francs) are then reserved for some serious browsing and shopping. Friday 11 pm, opening party at Härterei Saturday 12 -6 pm & Sunday 12-5 pm, fair at Maag Halle
Good to know: Markets
The weekend is perfect to stroll through a market, either to buy some vegetables at Helvetiaplatz or in Oerlikon, to pick up some flowers like at Bürkliplatz or to browse through goods at Kanzlei. These are the usual suspects, but I take pride in sharing the rather unknown.
Predigerplatz: In the old town you find a small but fine flea market filled with character and charm, stalls run by kids, pros and freaks and a proper Swiss «Ghackets mit Hörnli» on offer in the Predigerkirche. Always in Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. First Hand vs Second Hand: On the court between Josefstrasse 142 and 144,
five labels sell their goods in company of good food, good drinks and good music. The selection ranges fashion to furniture and design and from first hand pieces to second hand objects. It takes place this Saturday from 12-5 pm.
Web tip: Understanding rap
Rap lyrics are sometimes hard to get. Or do you know what Fancy means when saying: « I just knew that she was fine like a ticket on the dash»? The website Understand Rap translates the verses into standard English, with some light bulb moments and comic results.
