Add to favourit  Dear friends
Those who work with online media know the problem – BUGS. They sneak in and try to change the system. And until we find the problem and are able to fix it, a couple of weeks have gone by. Latest example: Our Cityscribe section. Therefore, further below, are some of the entries that were supposed to be published over the last two weeks. Big apologies to the cityscribes who were hoping to see their articles published before.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. I can’t believe it’s been 3 years since Härterei opened its doors and like any respectable toddler, will be throwing a 2-night electro-pop/hip-hop extravaganza to celebrate the anniversary. Icelandic groove-meisters FM Belfast have been invited to bring their chaotic party vibes to Friday night and hip-hop royalty, in the form of dj Muggs of Cypress Hill, will be playing on Saturday.
Friday & Saturday 11 pm, Härterei

Moods will be bringing us an evening of French delights on Saturday with a double live set from singer L and rapper Karimouche . L comes from Paris and brings with her that city’s mix of ethnic rhythms wrapped in the warm seductions only French singers can evoke.  Karimouche, on the other hand, incorporates the eclectic inspirations of cabaret singing, dance and acting to her beat-box driven rapping.
Saturday 8 pm, Moods

This Saturday, wearing green is a must, as we celebrate St Paddy’s day. In this spirit, a new Irish Pub opens its doors on that special day: The Pub. From 6 pm DJ Frédéric sets the tune and you get Irish beer as well as Irish stew. Sounds like a good place to start before heading to one of the parties in town: Irish Festival with live folk music Volkshaus, Music of the 80s and party tunes at Nelson Pub or house and club music at Lady Hamilton Pub. Happy St Patricks Day!
Saturday 6 pm, The Pub / 8 pm Volkshaus

Think big, is what Phonoflakes , a band from Zurich thought when they toured through the US for the first time. And got full success. Signed by a Californian label, they have just finished their second US tour, including a series of concerts in Mexico. While they play overseas in front of large audiences, you get the chance to see Phonoflakes in an intimate environment. Very intimate, as the concert takes place at Hafenkneipe this Tuesday. Expect melodic power pop and a lively live show.
Tuesday 8 pm, Hafenkneipe

Add to favourit  Eating at Zeughaushof

The sun is out and it’s lovely to spend lunch hour outside. But for me, it’s still too fresh for a cold lunch like a take away salad or sandwich. This week I discovered Zeughaushof . Outside, you’ll sit in the middle of Kasernenareal which feels like an oasis within the buzz of the town. Inside you find an airy, comfortable room. They offer several changing menus over lunch, seasonal and regional. The waiters are lovely and if you bring your sunglasses, you might never want to leave.

Add to favourit  SXSW music

South-by-South-West (SXSW) is a sprawling citywide festival that takes place every year in Austin, Texas and features music, film and technology. It is one of the largest music festivals in the world with over 2,000 new and established acts playing across 90 venues. What I love about SXSW is that they provide a (legal) torrent file to showcase tracks from most of the bands playing. This year’s sampler file contains 1,219 tracks.  If this is too much for you to swallow in one go, someone has already listened and filtered them into a ‘best of’ podcast. This is a fantastic way to discover some great new music.

Zurich will always be my first love but that doesn’t mean I can’t have a wandering eye for the satellite towns that make the extra effort to flirt with me. Over the coming week, Baden will be having what is, possibly, the first...

Add to favourit  Shopping tip: Female files

Street Files have been supplying the discerning menfolk of Zurich with their contemporary, urban fashion needs for almost ten years and now, after a decade, they’ve finally realised that those cute, better looking men who come to peruse their shop occasionally are actually something called females. With this flash of insight they’ll be opening the first Street Files Female store on Thursday night. The same cool streetwear, fashion, sneakers and accessories as always, but ladyized. The Grand Opening party will have music by Nadeeya Laflame, food by Panda Buns and drinks by Vagabundo.
Thursday 7 pm, Street Files Female, Badenerstrasse 156, 8004

Add to favourit  Concert: Call me kinky

There’s an old joke where a nymphomaniac tells a stranger she can only be turned on by Jewish cowboys, he then introduces himself as Broncho Goldstein. Now, you may think Jewish cowboys are a rarity but in actual fact there’s only one and his name is Kinky Friedman. Not only is he a famous country star having shared stages with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson but he’s also a well-known novelist, journalist and politician, having run for Governor of Texas. It’s his music that he’ll be bringing to Bogen F on Friday, and while he plays those deep country cuts as good as anyone, he also lets his acerbic humour have full flight with songs like ‘They Ain’t Makin’ Jews like Jesus Anymore’.
Friday 9 pm, Bogen F

Add to favourit  Eating: Street treat

If you’ve ever travelled to pretty much anywhere in the world, one of the joys is sampling the food available in that country, but if you want to get a real local flavour then you need to sample the food sold by street vendors. It may not be five-star cuisine but nothing beats eating a tasty, juicy something sitting on the roadside watching a strange world go by. Although Zurich has, let’s call it, a limited street food scene, the Street Food Festival being held at Puls 5 this weekend hopes to make up for it. They’ll have an international array of trucks and stalls selling everything from tacos and ceviche to fish’n’chips and oysters.
Friday 5 pm, Saturday & Sunday 12 pm, Puls 5

Add to favourit  Exhibition: Look at me

If anyone predicted the essence of the Internet age and social media the best, it was Andy Warhol with his ‘Everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes’ quote. Swiss painter and graffiti artist Ata Bozaci has used this as inspiration for his new exhibition, Beautiful Facebook - Fifteen Seconds of Fame. Taking portraits from Facebook, perhaps the greatest stage for our moment in the spotlight, he has used his unique art style to enlarge and digitalise them, removing them from the context of a social media profile and placing them on a gallery wall. The exhibition will be moving onto Basel and Bern but opens in Zurich on Saturday at The Trace Gallery.
Saturday 4 pm until 14th March, Trace Gallery, Militärstrasse 76, 8004

Add to favourit  Concert: Den and there

While Mumford and Sons have been sucking up all the oxygen of the folk-pop scene, there have been a few other bands waiting in the undergrowth, mammal-like, for the Mumfordosaurus to become extinct. One of these is Bear’s Den, from the UK, who are also partial to a passing banjo here and there but have a much deeper melancholy and drama to their sound and bring yearning that Bon Iver may even be jealous of. They play at Mascotte on Saturday night.
Saturday 7 pm, Mascotte

Add to favourit  Concert: Cheesy music

I know Tuesday’s aren’t the biggest draw for a night out in Zurich but if you’re in the mood for a little live music and cheese – strange I know, but stay with me - then get yourself down to the Duda Cafebar, upstairs from Cabaret Voltaire, for their Cheesesticks Club. Every Tuesday they have a live local band, with the type of music being played a surprise but often blues, jazz or rock. As well as the music, they’ll also be laying on a cheese buffet for you to nibble on between sips of your favourite beverage. All of this can be yours with free entry to the bar but one franc added to the drinks. As Granny Orp used to say, come for the music but stay for the cheese. Wise words indeed.
Every Tuesday 8 pm, Duda Cafebar

Add to favourit  Eating: A tender affair

A few weeks ago, five guys opened the restaurant «Stubä» (Swiss for living room) at Brauerstrasse in Kreis 4. Their speciality: The classic steak sandwich. The team tested different methods to make the meat very tender, and I can tell you: they succeeded. The rib-eye melts in your mouth, the spicing is perfect and the fresh bread rounds up a tasty meal. They will also take part at the street food festival at Puls 5 this weekend if you'd like to try it for yourself. Additionally, the bar team knows how to pour a mean drink and if you ask nicely they even mix your own personal favourite.
Restaurant Stubä, Brauerstrasse 42, 8004. Opening hours: Tuesday & Wednesday from 11.30 am to 12 am, Thursday & Friday from11.30 am to 1 am, Saturday from 6 pm to 3 am

Add to favourit  Good to know: Fighting the winter blues

Next to training my arms with a pint and my legs by hopping around at a concert, I rarely manage to do anything to stay fit. I don't fancy jogging or biking by myself when the wind blows cold in my face. So I decided to get a sports partner. If you feel the same, here are some options. Ron's-Join-me: On my website there is a category where you can ask for company to concerts, films and of course also find a training partner. Bootcamper: Train in a group with bootcamper, there are training groups all around town that you can join whenever you like. City Council: The city's sports department just set up a new page where people can post classifieds for a training partner. Have a look if someone is looking for you. Or place one yourself.

Add to favourit  Shopping tip: Healthy options

The flu is still lurking over Switzerland. To stay healthy you should eat a lot of vegetables. But as it’s too cold to head to the market, I found farmy.ch. The shop isn’t brand new but I just didn’t find the time yet to tell you about it. There you can order fruits, vegetables, flowers, bread and a lot of  goods all self-made and regionally produced. And because I love you all in a special way, I have a farmy-basket for 4 people to give away. Just send me an e-mail.
