Dream of art

The Proposal is an art space in a quite courtyard of Kreis 3 that will be showing 6 different prototypes that the artists hope will be made into fully realized pieces of art. If this wasn’t enough to excite you, the gallery also doubles as a fantastic B&B. You have the chance to sleep in the gallery itself or in a 1977 Peugeot J7 bus outside. A bagel breakfast and use of the gallery bikes are also included. If you have anyone visiting Zurich or you just fancy a change from your own bedroom walls, this may be just what you’re looking for. Proposal No. 3 - The Human Print has its opening, with dj set, tonight.
Thursday 6 pm, The Proposal, Dubstrasse 33a, 8003

Mystery men

Signori Misteriosi is the new moniker under which four Zurich guys, all with long and winding musical pasts, have come together to record. They claim Ennio Morricone and Them Crocked Vultures as seemingly mismatched inspirations, but having seen them perform last year, there may be something to that. They play live, and show the video premier of their new single, Duty of Loyalty, at Papiersaal this Friday. This is a double bill, with Jesh in the co-starring role.
Friday 9.30 pm, Papiersaal

Skream and schout

Oliver Jones, aka Skream, is one of UK dubstep’s original and leading lights. Having been born in Croydon, ground zero for dubstep, his pedigree is clear. He’s also proven himself to have crossover appeal with the slow burning remix of La Roux’s ‘In for the Kill’ and his own top 10 single.  He comes to BLOK this Friday, accompanied by his faithful sidekick Sgt Pokes. In support are the KillOut AllStars and Dubsludge Collective.
Friday 11 pm, BLOK Club

Bring the noise

As the cities of England burned last year and the wordless youth took out their frustrations on the consumer treats dangled, carrot-like, just in front of them, it seemed as if the time was ripe for a voice to rise above the clatter and move beyond the apocalyptic headlines. I don’t know if Scroobius Pip is that voice but he should be. More poet than rapper, he has anger and eloquence in equal measure and coming from the UK, has that underlying humour to his rhymes that tickle your ears. He plays Rote Fabrik on Saturday.
Saturday 9 pm, Rote Fabrik

Mini metal, big noise

The ewz.stattkino season continues this Saturday with a performance of Never Hang Around by Minimetal.  This is an avant-garde performance combining cinema, performance art and hard rock music. It is a version of the famous Swiss Alps legend, where the creators of Sennentuntschi, an artificial female sex object made-out-of-straw, become the targets of her revenge. As you can tell this isn’t The Sound of Music! I have 3 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.
Saturday 8 pm, ewz stattkino, Selnaustrasse 25, 8001

The Donor

What if you were the parent of twin daughters and it was within your power to save one of their lives, but not both? This is the premise for Helen Fitzgerald’s new book, The Donor. Although this may not sound like the most joyous of plots, Fitzgerald’s books are often filled with dark humour and unexpected hilarity, none more so than this one. She is at Kaufleuten on Wednesday to give a reading and answer questions, and I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.

Milchbar

Zurich has the highest club density in Europe, which is great for the nights and weekends but also means there is a lot of space underutilized during weekdays. With this thought in mind, the Milchbar was created. Setting up a mobile kitchen they conjure up simple, well-cooked menus daily. For only 10 francs you can choose either a meat or vegetarian menu, plus a salad and lemon water to drink. They also let you bring your own drinks. I've tried it: My wallet, my taste buds and I are very satisfied!
Monday to Friday 11:30 to 13:30 Milchbar (Abart), Manessestrasse 170, 8045

Guerrilla swings

Two Tampa Bay students mounted a handmade swing in the middle of their city. The reaction of passers-by was surprisingly great: first they stood talking, then they started to play and push one another and total strangers become temporary playmates. This simple idea was recognized as such a success that they the city council immediately set-up many more swings around the city. Conclusion: The simplest ideas often provide the strongest message. Future now

The day on which the line between science fiction and reality disappears no longer seems to be far away. This brave new world is especially being driven by the Microsoft Kinect technology. In the video Kinect Effect, Microsoft shows us in the real world what, even only 10 years ago, would have been fantasy for the movies. Lo and behold!

Add to favourit  Dear friends
Next week, Zurich celebrates Sächseläuten, I celebrate 10 years and the workers celebrate the international labour movement. I won't be able to send you a newsletter, so this issue includes tips for both weeks.
Give my love to the city and I'll see you on Tuesday, Ron

Add to favourit  Festival: Square one

From initial planning until completion last year, it’s taken fourteen years to get Sechseläutenplatz to be the gleaming modern space that we see today, and this weekend is the official opening celebrations. There’ll obviously be food and drink, especially from Graubünden which is where the new stone floor originated, but there’ll also be an Open-air cinema tonight, a music festival on Friday, a circus and opera festival on Saturday and a family day on Sunday. You can also get your photo taken with the Böögg before he meets his fiery doom in the service of weather forecasting.
Thursday to Sunday, various times, Sechseläutenplatz

Add to favourit  Dance: Step up

If the sunshine and blossoms have given you a little spring in your step lately, you’re not alone, as Dance Festival Steps comes to Zurich today and will stay for three weeks. Steps is the largest contemporary dance festival in Switzerland and draws in many international dance companies that tour throughout the country. The Zurich performances include a Taiwanese fable incorporating textile art, Japanese hip-hop and an Israeli synchronised techno troupe.
Thursday to 17th May, various times, various locations

Add to favourit  Party: Plastic beats

Just like his name suggests, Dutch dj legend Legowelt puts together various forms of music to create a whole that is uniquely his. He’s described his output as romantic-ghetto, techno-funk and even eurohorror-soundtrack but whatever it is it’s a damn-sight cooler than a plastic man with a silly haircut. He’ll be playing at Zukunft on Friday night with support from a selection of Zurich’s finest.
Friday 12 am, Zukunft

Add to favourit  Concert: Time warp

If you’ve ever felt you were born a little out of time, spare a thought for the Electric Swing Circus from the UK. They’re a fantastic 20’s jazz and swing band that combine their tunes with club beats from today, whether that’s dubstep, breakbeat , house and even reggae. What they do prove is that music may have changed but partying has been pretty consistent through the decades. They play live at Komplex Klub on Saturday.
Saturday 10 pm, Komplex Klub

Add to favourit  Festival: Spring has sprung

If those spring feelings just won’t leave you alone and you have the urge to be part of nature’s glorious cycle of rebirth and growth, rather than go looking for love in all the wrong places, why not get yourself down to Zurich’s Botanical Gardens for their Spring Festival on Sunday. Of course you’ll be able to buy plenty of spring plants for your windowsill, balcony or garden but they will also have a blossom deli, floral teas and spices you can mix yourself, beekeepers, soap making, guided tours of the gardens, food, drinks and music supplied by Die Blaskommoden.
Sunday 11 am to 4 pm, Botanischer Garten Universität Zürich,
Zollikerstrasse 107,
8008

Add to favourit  Festival: Men in tights

It's that time of the year again, where a part of Zurich's male population plays Robin Hood - or at least «Men in Tights». And where most of us get half a day off! The tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. The festivities start with the children's parade on Sunday but the highlight is on Monday when the guilds march through the centre – this year for the first time including the female guild. When the church bells start to ring at 6 pm (which is why it's called Sechseläuten) it's time to burn the Böögg, a snowman effigy stuffed with wadding and firecrackers. The sooner its head explodes, the better the summer weather forecast. The area by Bellevue will be very crowded but there are loads of stalls to get a bite to eat or a drink.
Monday 28th April from 3 pm, city centre

Add to favourit   Party: Happy Ron

On Tuesday, it’s my tenth anniversary and I look forward to celebrating with all of you. You’ll receive a special newsletter from me on the day itself with more details to all the surprises I organised.
Tuesday 29th April from 6 pm, Zollstrasse/Ambossrampe

Add to favourit  Worth Reading: Hair of the dog

«The only way to avoid a pounding head and queasiness the morning after is to drink in moderation», explains Anne Harding in the Men’s Health article «10 hangover remedies, what works?». I don’t expect you’ll do that on my party. But as your employer most likely awaits your arrival on Wednesday morning, the rest of the article might be helpful. Anne tells what might cure your hangover and what might make it worse.

Add to favourit   Festival: May Day

Zurich celebrates the international labour movement every 1st of May. Not all parts of Switzerland do that, so once again I’m glad I’m living in this town. The demonstration starts at 9.30 am in the city centre and ends at Helvetiaplatz. Afterwards there will be a large May Day party at Kasernenareal with international specialities, a very mixed crowd and various sounds. A great place to mingle on a free sunny day.
Thursday 1st May all day, all over town

Add to favourit  Vernissage: Bulgarian design

Fashion writer Tsitaliya sent out a fashion invitation to bring more international designers to Switzerland. With the result that at her first seasonal one-day pop-up shop four designers from Bulgaria will present their work and tell their story of their creative journey. To stimulate all your senses, there will also be traditional Bulgarian nibbles as well as a short photo-shoot on the programme.
Sunday 4th May 10 am to 3 pm, Nuyu at Utoquai 37
